Frederick Ainsworth born abt May 1842 Hammersmith
« on: Friday 22 November 19 20:51 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone, I would appreciate help with tracing parents of the above ancestor.
Frederick Ainsworth was born about may 1842 in Hammersmith we believe.  He first appears on the 1861 census aged about 19 and is stated as being a visitor.  We have been unable to trace any records for his parents who we believe to be Charles Ainsworth and Elizabeth Radley. On his marriage certificate in 1866 Frederick states his father to be Charles and is deceased.  In the absence of records from census, marriage or death we wonder if they could have been in the workhouse, possibly the Kensington poor law union but I do not know how to check this.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Many thanks

I am looking at them now (a bit late) some of them are Radleys but no relationship is given but on reflection they could possibly be an aunt/uncle.  thanks for the nudge

That looks very interesting!

Marriage on FreeBMD
Mar qtr 1841 Kensington vol 3 p141 - Charles RADLEY on same page as Catherine LYNE

Births on GRO Index:
RADLEY Henry John, Dec qtr 1843 Kensington vol 3 p276, mmn LYNE
RADLEY Matilda, Mar qtr 1846 Kensington vol 3 p314, mmn LYNE
RADLEY Eliza, Sep qtr 1848 Kensington vol 3 p303, mmn LYNE

But no birth for a Frederick on GRO with RADLEY/LYNE parents.

So, was Charles RADLEY a cousin or brother of Frederick's supposed mother Elizabeth?  Did something happen to Charles ANSWORTH and/or Elizabeth before 1851?

I think the next step is probably to get the birth cert (reference quoted by PaulineJ) to confirm Frederick's parents.

I agree that you have to get the birth certificate for Frederick - remember, he has been indexed on GRO as Answorth rather than Ainsworth. so you must order in that surname with ref. details given.

Can I ask why you think his mother was named Elizabeth?   Where has this come from?  Although Charles Radley had a half sister Elizabeth bp.1828 she was only 13 in 1841!   Indeed, she appears to be his only sister.

Charles Radley bp.23/6/1816 Great Dunmow, son of John and Elizabeth (nee Young, married 18/9/1815 Great Dunmow.   Elizabeth bur.11/5/1817 and John remarried to Frances Hitchcock 15/10/1821 Great Dunmow.

thank you all so much for your help.  I believed my cousin had obtained the birth certificate for Frederick Ainsworth 1842 but will double check. Until then it is difficult to move forward.

i have checked out the radleys mentioned in the census and Henry John Radley was a witness at Frederick Ainsworths marriage but still no relationship obvious.  We still think it possible that Frederick Ainsworth and his parents could have been in a workhouse as there is no record between birth and age 19.  Does anyone know how i might find records from the Kensington poor law union please?

kind regards

The hypotheses is the the 8 y old frederick in 1851 is the 19 y old in 1861.

Wasn't it clear?

Hi Pauline, sorry, yes clear thank you.  think I was too entrenched in our original hypothesis to register.  I will await my cousin's confirmation that she definitely has a full copy of Frederick's birth certificate.
