Doris Nellie Alberta Kirkpatrick - Colorado
« on: Tuesday 19 November 19 22:25 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I am trying to find out when Doris Nellie Alberta Kirkpatrick died and if she left any descendants.
Doris was born Doris Nellie Alberta Vale in 1892 in Australia, then with her parents, Rev Herbert Howlett Vale and his wife Henrietta De Gruchy, and two siblings migrated to Denver, Colorado.
Her father and elder sister died in 1906.
Doris first married Ellsworth N J Weston in 1917, they divorced.
In Dec 1920 she married Homer W Kirkpatrick, who died in 1961, and is buried at Crown Hill Cemetery, Wheat Ridge, Jefferson County, Colorado
There is a possible listing on the SSI for a Doris A Kirkpatrick who died in 1971.
Would anyone be able to check if this is the Doris I am looking for.
Thank you.

There's a Social Security application for Doris A. Kirkpatrick, born 14 Jul. 1892 and died 16 Jun. 1971.
A claim date was noted to be 7 Oct. 1971, so looks like a claim for death benefits.  Her Social Security number starts with 524, which indicates it was issued in Colorado.  No other information on there.

Various city directories from 1922 to at least 1960 have Doris & Homer living in Denver, Colorado.

Homer and Doris appear together in the 1930 & 1940 census, but no one else in their household.

I see Homer on the Denver Library's obituary index - https://history.denverlibrary.org/research-tool/denver-obituary-project  I don't see an entry for Doris for 1971.

Thank you shellyesq, this is a great help. I've written to the denver library to see if they can send me Homer's obituary.

With the social security application, who would I contact to find out more information about her estate? I have not got any experience with US records.
I see that Homer had a probate at the Denver Probate Court, but could not see any for Doris.

Mailing address
Social Security Administration
6401 Security Blvd.
Baltimore
Maryland 21235.

There is a website with many forms but none relevant to queries about a deceased person.

I don't think the Social Sec. Administration would handle or even know anything about the estate.
The court is the place to contact.

You could ask the SSA for her SS-5 form, but the most you would learn is her parents' names, which you know, and the street address where she was living when she applied for a social security number.  Not very important in the long run, in this case.

btw, I found this site while looking. Maybe it would be helpful to you for future reference, if you have other relatives in the same area in Australia. I'm not sure if everything is correct, obviously.

Doris and her father were on it.

I agree that Social Security would probably not provide any further useful information.

A local court would handle the estate.  Getting information from them would probably be more challenging than getting the obituary for Homer, so I would focus on that first.  You could also try contacting the cemetery to see if anyone else is buried with Homer.
