Malta 1816
« on: Friday 19 August 05 18:51 BST (UK) »
I've just discovered my ggg grandmother was born in Santa Maria, Malta, in 1816.  I am assuming her father was a soldier there.  Does anybody know if there was a large presence of military in Malta then, did we have a base there.  Many thanks for any info.

I've just discovered via Aldo who runs the Malta Family History site that one of my ancestors born in Malta was baptised in the Government Chapel located in the Governor's Palace in Valletta in 1822. The baby's father is described as 'Government Employee' therefore he was not in the Armed Services, but a Civil Servant of some kind.  Does anybody know how I can obtain more information regarding this, are the records open to anyone or is there a researcher in Malta who could photocopy the relevant documents for me.  Any help greatly appreciated.

I just came across your message and wonder whether you have had any success? The reason I ask is that my ggggrandmother was born in Valletta, Malta in 1812 and I have not been able to find her baptism in the church records there. I have been told that there was some connection with the Government and so the Governor's Chapel looks interesting!
Any advice much appreciated.

No luck so far I'm afraid.  I got the name of a researcher via the Maltese Government website and emailed them but have had no reply, probably email address out of date.  I wouldn't have thought that these records would be available to the general public so have come to a bit of a halt until I can get the name of an authentic Maltese researcher.  If I do get lucky I will post the results here and would be very grateful if you would do the same.  I have five siblings all born in Malta (one of whom died there age 2) and would really like to find out why they were there if they were not in the services.  Best Wishes.

Thank you for the reply and sorry that you haven't made any progress. I shall certainly keep you in touch with any developments but I have been up against this brick wall for so many years that I shouldn't hold your breath! Good luck.
