Royal Marine Commando?
« on: Friday 15 November 19 14:07 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to help out a relative of a recently deceased friend who is hunting through a huge mass of belongings because "those war medals are in there somewhere". We just want to know if he was awarded anything so she knows whether to continue this search.

The person who was said to have been awarded the medals was George Elijah JACQUES, born 30.05.1923 in Birmingham (possibly Darlaston). He is said to have been a Royal Marine Commando and she has found a very faded certificate of service which has a number something like PLYX 106373 (that may be incorrect, she said it was very hard to read) on it. She is unclear what that number relates to.

Can anyone out there point me in the right direction to help her?

Many thanks.

Wotty.

PLY is the prefix indicating his "port division" was Plymouth.  The X relates to a post 1930 enlistment.  The number makes his complete number so PLYX 10673 is his service number.

His service record will still be held by the Ministry of Defence and if he qualified for any campaign medals (they had to be applied for) they would be listed on his record.  If he was awarded a gallantry medal it would be listed in the London Gazette but I find no record.
