Maria Louisa Holt photo for dating
« on: Monday 11 November 19 16:42 GMT (UK) »
I think this photo is of my Great Grandma Maria Louisa Holt (nee Blackman.) She was born in 1829 in Camberwell and died in 1915. She married Tempest Holt, who died in 1899 at Camberwell. They were married in 1852 at Newington.

On the other hand, it might be of my Grandma Mary Louise Holt. I realise the names are almost the same - perhaps they were named after a popular member of the Royal Family? She was born in 1859 at Camberwell, and her maiden name was Coppard. She was married in 1888 to Sidney Samuel Holt, and he died in 1905.

I am hoping that the photo can be dated, which will determine which of the two it is. The back is plain. Is it possible that the subject matter is in mourning? If so, I may be able to confirm the date of a family death event once I have a reasonably accurate date to work from.

Thanks in advance to the photo expert for his/her time.

I saw you hadn't had a response to your post, so here are my thoughts which might prompt some more replies.

The woman pictured looks to be late 30's to early 40's, which would give a photo date of around 1870 or 1900, depending on whether it is great grandma or grandma.

The style of her dress, particularly the taffeta on the shoulders, together with her hairstyle suggest to me that 1900's is more likely.

I think it is more likely to ber the later of the two ancestors.  She may not be wearing black, as any dark colours will show black in B&W photos.
 - and she looks as if she is dressed for something special, rather than every day wear.

Hairstyle and dress suggest later to me - i.e. 1900s or possibly late 1890s.

Thanks for your opinions on the date.
In view of the fact that there have not been any further replies, I think we can now close this request.
