The guy on the left appears to be wearing spurs.
This is consistent with the cross belt he is wearing and making it likely that he was a driver in the Royal Australian Artillery.

Sorry I missed this last week. Absolutely, I am a descendant too and happy to share info. Tom died in a tragic accident during the Depression in 1931. He was unemployed and hawking from a road cart when he was hit by a car and died of his injuries.
