Thanks! Not their servants you mean... just servants as an occupation. That makes sense PB  :)

Hello Northrn Grl.  I am new to this so forgive if doing something wrong. I do believe if Donald McLeod is your relative we  are cousins of some type. My aunt did a lot of research and I have been given it. I have info on Donald McLeod the son. of Donald and Sarah. I have photos of the gravesite in Parkhill Ontario of some of the family and know the history forward from my GGG grandfather. I have a photo of himself as well. THis is the Donald that travelled with his family as a child.

hi
you may like to take a look at Bill Lawsons books
http://www.billlawson.com/books.htm
he covers south uist and benbecula

Unfortunately there are no Croft History Books for Benbecula areas & likewise for areas such as Lochboisdale/Daliburgh/Askernish/Frobost/Milton etc. nor Eriskay.

The only references to Benbecula are the Register of Emigrants & Index to Marriages books.

Thanks Annie. I’ve been trying to find 2 Bill Lawson books that I believe will have some information for me. Usually you can find book content online to read but it seems the only way you can read content from his books is to actually buy them directly from his designated website. I wonder if anyone does lookups?

Annie

In Bill Lawson’s Register of Emigrants from the Western Isles of Scotland 1750-1900, Volume 2 Isles of South Uist and Benbecula, Part 2 1840-1900 it has what I believe is my family: (They emigrated in 1849 from Benbecula to Canada)

John MacLeod
Kate MacLeod
Kirsty MacLeod
Neil MacLeod
Marion MacLeod
Donald MacLeod
Ann MacLeod

It says Date of emigration and place of settlement in the New World. Port of embarkation, date of birth and/or death, marital information, and reference to original sources are also provided. Much historical and genealogical information are also provided.  I’m wondering what other info is included.

Do you have this book?

Those are the ones I looked up earlier on the thread & it only gives YoB.

I will have a look later when I get home & type exactly what's written as I have to go out soon.

Hi NG,

Apologies, I haven't been online for a while.

This is the info. exactly as it's typed in the book...

DESTINATION UNKNOWN                                                                                                125

SUE 612                                                                                                                        BL2043

John MacLeod 1791- = Marion 1801-, Kirsty 1826-, Neil 1829-, Kate 1821-, Donald 1834-, Ann 1840-

John MacLeod and family emigrated from Uachdar in the 1840s                                         SC41

This is the references...

125 = Pg No.
SUE 612 = South Uist Emigrants & their entry no. (gives an indication of the amount of families)
BL2043 = Bill Lawson' own resource collection
SC41 = Scottish 1841 Census

The introduction has 7 x A4 sheets giving a bit about emigration from the islands in general, how the info. was gathered & sources used, general history about S/Uist & Benbecula.

The extra info. does not apply to any 1 family in particular, any info. about them is written in their entry.
I will try & explain your quote as best I can from your quote using bold as reference...

"It says Date of emigration and place of settlement in the New World. Port of embarkation, date of birth and/or death, marital information, and reference to original sources are also provided. Much historical and genealogical information are also provided.  I’m wondering what other info is included."

There are no specific dates as there are no passenger lists as such although it is known the majority left for Canada with the exception of info. re the Lulan (1848). Those with 'Destination Unknown' have not been traced by BL.
BL explains the lists were drawn up from people who disappeared from census records, later found on Canadian census', Obits, MIs & other published sources e.g. OGS (Ontario Genealogical Society), HOW (History of Wapella) Wapella Centennial Committee

The place of settlement, again from Census' etc.

There are no specific dates of birth, only years which were taken from the Census of the years prior to disappearing i.e. circa dates

There is no specific info. on deaths as such apart from 1791-1860, 'dii' (died in infancy) or 'dy' (died young)

There is no specific info. on marriages apart from '=', 's.o. or d.o.' (son/dau of) with the name of the husband/wife (most have MS) (maiden surname) &/or 'WO' (widower/widow of x) &/or name of 2nd wife

I searched for an e.g. of one with more details than that of your family & as they're all different I decided to do a mock one i.e. not any exact family in the book but an example which incorporates all likely info. on any entry...

SUE 455                                                                                                                    BL1471

John MacDonald 1791-1860 (s.o. Donald)) Lochboisdale
          = (1) Mary MacIntyre 1803- (d.o. Alexander)
                 (widow of Ewen MacKinnon))
                 1 Angus 1825-     2 Archibald - 1827

3 Catherine 1829- = (1) Angus Gillies 1825-
                               (2) Peter MacKay (widower of Ann MacLellan) 1828-
4 Mary 1831-
5 Donald 1832-

          = (2) Marion Morrison 1805-1877
6 Archibald (dy)
7 Margaret 1839-

John MacDonald and family emigrated from Lochboisdale in 1848 and settled in William Township, Middlesex County                                                                     RCR, SC41, OC51, & 61, OBI, PLL

RCR? (I haven't found what it relates to), SC (Scottish Census), OBI (I haven't found what it relates to), PLL (Passenger List of the Lulan)

Hope the above helps & feel free to ask anymore questions relating to the writings & or other references in the book.
