The youngest McDonald, Catherine, married (as Katie) on 13 October 1887 Middlesex, Ontario to an Isaac G Chisher. A Sarah A McDonald (sister?) was a witness to the marriage. Parents as we have for the other two marriage, Donald and Catherine McDonald.

Katie and family show in Port Huron, Michigan (where sister Sarah Ann was living) by the 1910 census www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MLTM-TQQ.

Can't see burial/death reg for her to reconfirm mother Catherine's maiden name.

Rosinish, I see now where you were coming from.

I think that in Ontario marriage records you would get John McLeod and Sarah maiden name (which gives you both surnames) or John and Sarah in this case McDonald which gives you the married couple with the single surname (and which in this case is looking like it should have been McLeod).

Hope this makes sense.

Great finds MonicaL!

PB, I thought it was the way you'd written it i.e. I 'read' (was past tense) ;D

I have it now...well done Monica!

I've been looking through the Emigrant records in search of possible clues.

Mary Shears, daughter of James and Catherine McLeod married in Port Huron, Michigan where we are finding links to her two McDonald half sisters. She married a William Murdoch and died in Port Huron on 20 Mar 1905. Parents showing as James and Catherine Shears.

When she married (on 23 Dec 1896 in St Clair, Michigan) her parents are down as 'unknown'  :-\ yet I think her eldest half sister Margaret may have been a witness. There is a Miss Maggie McDonald from Detroit showing as the witness (image of marriage available, also here https://sites.rootsweb.com/%7Emistcla2/m_records6.htm  - 23 Dec 1896, Port Huron).

MonicaL...

I believe the 1905 death cert image for Mary Murdock gives her parents as James Shears and Catherine McLeod?

Last post before I log off...

The marriage for Catherine, as we have already, showed:

004542-74 James SHEARS, 28, laborer, England, Parkhill, s/o John and Mary, mar Catharine McDONALD, 28, widow, Scotland, Parkhill, d/o John and Sarah McDONALD, witn L. I. OSBORNE and C. McLEAN both of Parkhill, 26 Feb 1874 Parkhill
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~maryc/msex74.htm

Her death cert in 1918 showed mother as Sarah MCISAAC.

Just wanted to add that MacIsaac and MacDonald are very linked. One of my main lines, from the Western Highlands, were originally MacIsaac. By the mid 1850s to the 1880s, the surname had converted to MacDonald. Many BMD registrations would show both surnames, for example Angus MacIsaac or MacDonald.

I agree. It appears that Catherine married first a McDonald, had Margaret (shares tombstone) Sarah, John, Catherine.  2nd marriage to James Shears (as Catherine McDonald) and had child Mary. No idea why her children would have been listed as servants on the 1881 census  :-\ Seems to match the census and all the info you folks have come up with for the children. Thank you for all the awesome research (: Hopefully I can connect her to Donald as a sister

The McDonald children in the 1881 census were all of working age and were most likely working in other households or establishments in the area but still living with James and Catherine.
