With additional names to search, wondering about this entry in South Uist in 1841:

John Mcleod 50 Farmer
Marion Mcleod 40
Chirsty Mcleod 15
Niel Mcleod 12
Ketty Mcleod 10
Donald Mcleod 7
Anne Mcleod 1

Address: Dunganach, South Uist

Ketty/Kitty is normally a variant of Catherine. No son Alexander in the household though.

I also recently found that 1851 Census and it is a very good possibility but I compared the 1861 census you attached with the one I have for Alexander, Donald and Sarah in West Williams, Middlesex and now I have a mystery. It appears to be the SAME census for same area, same neighbours, etc...  but mine has  “absent family members” Neil and Anne missing altogether! Having Neil (listed as soldier, residence unknown) and Anne (residence London) is a game changer as I recently had one researcher in Scotland find a 1841 Scotland census for John, Marion, Christy, Neil, Donald, Ketty, Anne.  No Alexander as MonicaL said though but the best lead yet! Birth years close and living in Benbecula, South Uist. I have attached the 1861 census in question. Let me know what you think...

I don't believe John died in 1850.  The particulars on the Ingersoll death is he was b 1810-1814 and died between 1850-1867.  This is from the Oxford OGS which is online.  I suggest you contact the Oxford OGS for clarification.

I'm also not sold on Sarah/Marion.  Apart from the 1891 Census there is no Sarah/Marion listed in the 1881/1871 tied to the family members in the townships you mentioned unless they were in Huron South.

There is a John/Mary in the 1851 for Nissouri with a Donald closet in age to the one you seek but just another option.

If this was my search I would contact the London & Middlesex OGS as well as Oxford for assistance.  Both have most cemeteries but you can check the TONI here for other family members https://ogs.on.ca/databases/toni this is far from being a complete database but a good start.

I would find out where Sarah is buried on would like to think she lays with her husband.

DonM,

That’s interesting you have found information on John McLeod. Do you have a link you could share to that information?
I am going on the approximate death date based on his son, Donald’s obit. It stated they came to Canada in 1849 and “lived for a time at Ingersol, where his father died. After two years residence at Ingersol, the widowed mother settled with her children on the 18th Con., East Williams.” I am not sure if that means 2 years AFTER John died or they were in Ingersol for 2 years TOTAL. I have a Sarah, widowed, along with sons Alexander and Donald in that area of Middlesex, ON, on the 1861 and 1871 census. Sarah died January 27, 1892 but I don’t have her burial information. I have no indication of any other name for her but Sarah as this is also the name given for Donald’s mother on his marriage certificate. Listed John and Sarah McLeod.  I will contact the society again to see what they can assist with. Thanks for all your help (:

Ages were certainly up and down weren't they for the family. Sarah, with Donald and his family, is showing as aged 100 on the 1891 census  ::)

Doesn't help sometimes!

So true Monica! I think my McLeods especially didn’t like to reveal their true age LOL My great great grandfather Donald included. Its all over the place for Sarah. I have that census with her as 100 but as her death record says 90 I feel that’s more plausible ... until I have a birth record to prove otherwise anyways.

The family appear to be indexed on Ancestry 1841 as;
Parish South Uist 118 ED 2 Pg 16

SP 1841

MCLEOD 118/ 2/ 15 South Uist Inverness
John 50
Marion 40
Chirsty 15
Niel 12
Ketty 10
Donald 7
Anne 1

There were 2 families with heads named John MacLeod both with a wife Marion recorded in the Register of Emigrants Vol 2 South Uist & Benbecula 1840 - 1900 both emigrating from Benbecula;

This seems to be the family, no Alexander, emigrated from Uachdar.
There's room for another child (Alexander) who may be elsewhere in 1841?

John MacLeod 1791
Marion 1801
Kirsty 1826
Neil 1829
Kate 1831
Donald 1834
Ann 1840

2nd family, no Alexander, emigrated from Lidistrom(e);

John MacLeod 1796
Marion 1801
Donald 1821
Kenneth 1826
Kirsty 1829
Neil 1830
Mary 1833

"John d. Abt 1850 Ingersoll, ON
Sarah b. Abt 1802 South Uist d. January 27, 1892 McGillivray, ON
Alexander b. Abt 1832 Benbecula
Donald b. AUGUST 18 1836 • Benbecula, South Uist, Inverness-shire, Scotland d. APRIL 7 1916 • McGillivray, Ontario Canada. Buried Parkhill, Ontario.
I know very little about his sisters except on Donald’s Obituary it said 2 sisters were still living. Family lore is one was Helen."

Can you tell us about the family 'lore' regarding Helen as Helen/Ellen/Lena etc. is not a typical Uist name?

I haven't found a stray Alexander elsewhere on the Uist 1841 so far.
