George PICKERING/Alice HARKER
« on: Friday 01 November 19 00:57 GMT (UK) »
I've been on the Northumberland forum with my questions and had great help. I am now chasing up the marriage of these 2 people on 24 April 1871 (familysearch) and freebmd show the entries. However there could be confusion with her name could be HAWKER. Is there a way I can see this actual marriage entry to see for myself. The Durham Co records on line come up with nothing.
Cheers

What makes you suspect her name could be Hawker?

Her childrens births show her maiden name as Harker, she married as Harker (dau. of George Harker) and although she states bc.1847 Houghton le Spring on 1871 census she was in fact born in 1849 - Alice Harker birth Dec.1849 - mmn  Cummings.

In 1851 she is with her parents George Harker and wife Ann in East Rainton, Durham.

Her surname was definitely Harker.

The related thread: https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=820361.0

‘ Alice Hawker 1st spouse to John George on his death trans’.

If John G had a strong accent, and someone else wrote out the details, it wouldn’t be difficult to hear Harker as Hawker.

A transcript of this NSW birth may be useful?: 18486/1878 PICKERING James William parents GEORGE and ALICE LAMBTON

Yes,  agree,  Hawker v Harker - it can easily be misheard by those 1880s NSW deputy registrars who did not need to pass any exam in spelling to be allowed to fill part time positions in rural NSW offices.  BUT there can also be a further simple explanation ... those clerks knew how to 'scribble' and write with broken nibs and often used  poor quality blotting paper and .... it was not until the 1930s that a combined effort of volunteers commenced the huge task of preparing an index of the NSW Reg Gens Head Office records ... so anyone looking at those handwritten registrations may well have 'scribbled' Harker and 21st century eyes may well read that scribble as Hawker OR vice versa ... the letter 'w' and the letter 'r' may be mis-reads.

Annette 7 Sorry I didn't answer your question.  On George's death transcript it was listed as HAWKER informed by his son, so I had to keep the options open. The agent checked again also. Everything points to Harker and also accents and handwriting come into it, so sticking with Harker.
