Registrars Office Archives
« on: Wednesday 30 October 19 14:00 GMT (UK) »
I have an ancestor who married in a Dublin registrars office 28th December 1885. The image I found on Irishgenealogy.ie isn't very clear so I'm unsure of details like the occupations. I think they say coachman or something similar.

Would records from the registrars office show any further details? Irishgenealogy.ie just shows the registry entry.

The reason I'm asking is that my ancestor John Edney had two daughters called Margaret. Margaret born 31 Dec 1859 and Margaret Mary born 11 may 1863. I'm not sure which Margaret is the bride in this marriage. Marrying in a registrars office would mean it's unlikely there was a parish marriage that would have shown the mother, clearing this up. Even if there was a blessing ther most likely isn't a record of it.

Seems a poor scan - may be worth contacting DUblin offices for a better scan [Scotland'sPeople are very good at this].

I think groom & his father were both down as 'carman', bride's father 'coachman'. Cannot quite read witnesses names but may be J Rutledge & M Redmund.

Did both Margarets survive? Have you found either of them in 1901 & 1911 to see which age one was known as Maggie?

LINK to original record

I would read the name as Maggie which is not very helpful in this case

I read the record as:
John ALLEN (open to correction; full age; bachelor; carman; 75 Charlemont Street; father John ALLEN (?) (dead); carman
note the surname is transcribed as ANNS

Maggie EDNEY; full; spinster; -; 17 Charlemont Street; father John EDNEY (dead); coachman

Witnesses: J or H Rutledge & M Redmond

Are you sure both Margaret lived to adulthood?

Apologies Josey for second post - but we seem to agree here

You'd need to research both.....

Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

I agree dathai that this is her sister - there are a few more in the family as well

There is an on-line tree that shows Maggie's married name as ANNS and that she died in Holburn, England in 1939 in Q3 aged 70
This implies she was born c 1869

The earlier Margaret may have died between Dec 1858 and May 1863 when the second child named Margaret was born as there are few civil records for deaths at that time. You might be lucky and locate a cemetery record to confirm this.
