SLARK marriage 1740's Norwich

Hi folks,

I'm searching for a marriage for Robert SLARK/e to Phillis (unknown) abt 1742-1749.
(Surname may be transcribed as HARK/e etc)

I believe that Robert Slark was bp 1722 at St Gregory's Norwich (son of John & Eliz)

First child's christening I've found was:
Phillis SLARK/e     18 Oct 1749   St Stephen's Norwich
then Elizabeth in 1750/1 at St Stephens.
Then Mary in 1753 at St Lawrence plus a few extra children all bp in Norwich

Both Robert & Phillis SLARK were buried in 1766 at St Gregory's Norwich.

Any ideas about where/when they married would be very much appreciated.

Hello Di,

Spent some time looking for this marriage - to no avail.

So many different transcriptions - Stark, Stack, Slack, Slank

Had a good look on the Family Search site - a few interesting records.

John Slark's will, and a fascinating inventory - plus some St Gregory's Parish Chest entries, showing John as one of the churchwardens.

Thanks for spending time looking for these records. It does appear that Robert & Phillis may not have married or did so outside the area.

I'd appreciate link/s to the FS wills/Inventory records please. I've been searching some of them but it's a long haul. Is there an easy way of locating records without checking 1000's individually? Can't be greedy though but an index would be wonderful - I'm just grateful that the records are even there.

Hello again,

I use Norfolk Records Office Wills search. (Nrocat)
Results give you the relevant Archdeaconry and a reference number.
Then go to the Family Search site, find the Archdeaconry and date, and try to find the page!

John Slark's will was indexed on the Nrocat site as "Slack"

I was intrigued that John was a painter.
The inventory shows he was a picture painter.  Quite prolific too, judging by the number of his pictures appearing on the inventory.
It also mentions his sons, including Robert - and a tantalizing list of names to research
Goes on for quite a few pages.

Thanks ever so much. What a wonderful discovery.

All those are a great bonus and the will & inventory give a great insight into John & his family. I had John as a House Painter - the thought that he may have painted pictures hadn't occurred to me.

Also a bit early, and at St Sepulchre, down in London

Robert Clark + Phillis Constable

It does seem to say Clark.
I mention it because the only possibility I can find for the bride (presuming she wasn't a widow) is a baptism at St Michael Coslany, Norwich, 21st April 1723
Phillis, daughter of Charles Constable & Phillis his wife born April ye 17th

Not sure what happened to her parents. Again, the only marriage possibility I've come up with is in London, 18 Feb 1710, at the Fleet, Charles Constable + Phillis Rain. Neither are said to be of Norfolk. At least Phillis does not seem to have been a particularly common name at the time.

Burial of a MARY 21 May 1728, Daug of Charles.
She doesnt seem to be Bapt Norfolk

Charles may have been buried * Dec 1736, no age given, married man

Thanks for this idea - it felt like I'd checked nearly every Phillis in UK (slight exaggeration!!) and couldn't seem to pinpoint any one in particular but this is interesting as it's one of the few or only Phillis married to a *ark*.
I have Robert Bp in 1722 and if Phillis was born 1723 a marriage in 1744 would fit rather nicely.

I'll see if there's anything further re Charles Constable somewhere in Norfolk. I wonder if there's a will?
