Giles as a female first name

Hi all,
I have the name Giles or Giley popping up for female family members in Donegal (Creeslough area). Never seen this before and haven't ever heard it before as a female name today? Does anyone know anything about Giles as a female name?

Ive seen Giles or Giley on many marriage certificates.
Giles was a female name.

Have a look at  births on irishgenealogy.ie
Enter first of Giles name only and select a Donegal parish.( I chose Millford)

Ive looked at the first few in date order and all were female

put in search box FORENAME name Giles or Giley quite a lot come up for Donegal.

My grandfather’s parents emigrated from the Creeslough area. Their neighbouring families farmed in several of the area’s townlands and a few had businesses/resided in Creeslough village. Grandfather’s sister married a man whose mother appears variously as Giley/Jiley/Julia in census, church  and civil records.
