Good points JJ.

Many thanks Cattao for the transcription of Matthew's birth, registered Lithgow NSW 10 Oct 1887.

Until around 1918, births were all recorded as a result of verbal questions, of the baby's parents by people who were often part timers.  Formal compulsory schooling did not commence in NSW until the mid to late 1870s, so parents were often without quality education in respect to NSW Government Admin requirements, but also sometimes those part timers were also lacking full understanding of the Admin requirements and purposes etc.

So, the document shows 'Newcastle' for the place of that marriage of Matthew's parents.   I am absolutely sure that that means Newcastle, New South Wales,  I am absolutely confident on that, but that does NOT mean that is where or when George married Matthew's mum.      It just means that the clerk asked George 'where and when did you marry' and George has answered 23 March (and the year) at Newcastle.   BUT the clerk couldn't write down the year properly...    likely he meant 1884  :) but that's a tight squeeze for that many births prior to Matthew....

I will speak with some of my elderly relatives who are retired NSW BDM senior officers.  May not be back with further comments on that b.c. transcription for a day or so...

.......

And in 1871, John PICKERING, 49, and his son George, 25,  and their unmarried female servant, Alice HARKER, 24 in the one household – Houghton-le-Spring.   RG10, 4979/31/7
....

I cannot find this 1871 census listing at familysearch, sorry.  But I found the marriage there, so less than one month after that census was taken, George married Alice..   :)
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NJN3-JS7  Alice HARKER married George PICKERING 24 April 1871.

so that's not a March marriage...  :)

ADD,

https://www.freecen.org.uk/  Transcript of that 1871 census with that household is there on that link.

Excellent, Alan.

I still can’t get past George hooking up with the deserted Mary in Lithgow.

Cuthbert died 1918 in WA.

Yes, Mary Hannah DYKES (EMBLETON), the daughter, died Lithgow 1958

Does that tree mention Thomas, the father, a remarriage for Mary, or a marriage between George HAMMONDS and C-Katherine Embleton in 1902?

I'm getting very confused with all the names you folk have  found and many thanks for all that. I have been checking out Houghton le Spring and there is a mine - Pickering mine!!!! a few Pickering names mentioned in a very early explosion in one of the local mines. In the census both father John and son George are listed as labourers, not miners but that doesn't mean anything really. I'm waiting for verification of Alice's maiden name Harker not Hawker and then it would be safe to follow up with the shipping found earlier??
Gray, Madigan, Purdy, Churchwood.

The names aren’t difficult.  ;)

It’s not inconceivable that both Carty and Embleton were used on certs, if Mary Carty was first married to an Embleton.

Can you refresh my memory, where have you seen both Harker and Hawker?

I see Harker only.
