Ernest Graham
« on: Saturday 12 October 19 11:22 BST (UK) »
Been given an impossible task but hope someone can help me.

A friend has asked me to help with a family tree but knows nothing about his father's origins other than his name is Ernest Graham who was born about 1934 and lived in Fountainbridge, Edinburgh and assumed he was born there. We know he was one of seven children and one of the brothers had the name Malise (Not sure how it was spelt but sounded like Malice).

He married Violet Margaret Rose Smart in Plymouth, Devon in 1961 and died in Truro in Cornwall in 2018.

I would be grateful if someone could tell me where I might look next to find his ancestors. I looked at Scotland's people but just got confused.

A good starting point if you think they were Scottish is  :https//www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
You will need to create an account. You can then search for free. If you want to view images then you will need to buy credits.

I did register with Scotland's people and it threw up a few with that name but it seems I have to pay to see more about them but what would I see? Not sure what information is on them so I guess I would have to pay to see them all. My problem is, even if it had their mother's maiden name etc, how would I know if it the one I am looking for as I know nothing about them except they were one of seven children?

You should always start with what you know.  ;D .  Do you have his marriage certificate as that could name his father

As Craclyn has mentioned www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk is the only site to try
There are 2 births on Scotlands People
Ernest Graham 1933 Haymarket
Ernest Graham 1935 St Giles both in the Edinburgh District
Unfortunately these certificates would need to be ordered
Does his marriage certificate mention a fathers name

If his wife is still living you should remove her name from your post

I will send off for the marriage certificate, it will have his father's name on it I am sure so I can work from there but let's just hope his father has an unusual name or I will be spending a fortune looking at people and not knowing if they fit in or not. It is so much easier looking at the records outside of Scotland where you can see immediately  who their brothers and sisters are, occupations etc. I think this may prove a bit of a nightmare as it seems to be all guesswork and no way of knowing if you guessed right
