barcraft/beecroft/bearcroft/becroft
« on: Friday 11 October 19 16:50 BST (UK) »
Different spellings make this difficult and some church records unavailable.
Is Elizabeth Barcroft/Barcraft born 1739 Chilton  sister to Matthew Becroft born 1741 at Thrundell and Jane Barecraft born 1738 at Thrundale and Dorothy about same age.  Father of all is Matthew Bearcroft who, I believe, was buried in  1749 at Kelloe. I have read the will of Jane Becroft  widow of Cassop,1767,  which makes me think I am on right track. Most of records seem to be Kirk Merrington.
Have not found marriage, presumably around 1735/38. Elizabeth at the top has been very hard to trace  since she is known as Beecroft and married peter bell in 1760 at Kelloe who farmed at Crow Trees. In our family tree no-one has succeeded in tracing Elizabeth, because of misleading spelling.
Is Thrundell/Thrundale Tursdale?

According to this thesis:
http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/4757/1/4757_2226.PDF?UkUDh:CyT

(click the link and do a CTRL +F  to search for Thrundale )
and it says that it was a farm created from 2 thirds of one of the Chilton farms in 1693

there is slightly more info (but not much) in that thesis.

Not sure if that's of any help?

Yes, thank you. It has answered my question about Chilton and Thrundale being the same. I shall continue to read the thesis which concerns a lot of the farms in the area which mean something to me. I would never have found this without your help.

Pleased it was helpful.
NB when I said there wasn't much more info, I was just referring to Thrundale - have just realised that comment sounded quite dismissive about this person's hard work and that would be very unfair and unwarranted :-)

I'm sure no-one would think that. The thesis was very informative and detailed and I learnt far more from it than combing through records at Durham Univ. online. I live a long way from Durham now or would be happy to do my own research. Do you have access to the actual records of those people I mentioned? Especially Elizabeth. I don't know what the records say at all. Only know Chilton and Thrundell/ Thrundale.

No sorry, I too live a long way from Durham and the BTS for Merrington  don't start after this time frame. Family Search don't appear to have the Parish Registers in the catalogue at all so even visiting an FHC wouldn't help.

Durham Records Online have transcriptions for this time frame from the PR and  Elizabeth's record is in the database. In my experience they transcribe in full (including any notes etc).
All it has for Elizabeth is date of baptism, child's name, father's name and abode.
As was common back then, Mum didn't even get a mention. I'd very much doubt that the original register has any more info.
