Charles Granath
« on: Friday 11 October 19 12:07 BST (UK) »
Can some kind RC do me a favour please, I do not have worldwide sub but I have been searching for

CHARLES WALTER GRANATH born 1877 London

he disappeared when his wife died in 1906 and a child a few years after, wasn't on 1911 or 1939, I have asked about him on here before with no luck

BUT

today I have found on Ancestry the following

Publication 03/10/1950 Dunkirk New York Observer Charles Granath

I would much appreciate if someone can pass this info over to me please

Thank you in anticipation

Louisa Maud

PREVIOUS REQUEST
Charles Walter Granath born Holborn  born 1877 of Henric (Henry) and Elizabeth Thompson

Charles Granath married Florence Tully 1902, Florence died in 1906 3 weeks after Charles was born

Issue from this marriage
Florence born 1903 died 1912
Lilian born 1904 died 1907
Charles born 1906 died North Allerton Yorks  1977, although he never married he is purported to have had a daughter possibly called Joan who may have been born in Bedale

I have searched for a death for Charles Walter born 1877 to no avail,  he does not appear on the 1911 census and his 2 surviving children were living with grandparents at 1911, his name was also shown as --------  Granath on Florence's death cert when she died in hospital 1912, he seems to have just disappeared

This has been put on Rootschat before but now that more records are being released I am trying again.

I wonder if this poor man, bereft of wife and 2 of his children went away, he may have died alone and unknown.

Hi
Not from Ancestry because I don't have a sub and I can't find it on their website anyway but the date and paper you want
The case of Charles Granath 72 of Ashville Bay currently charged with first degree assault will not be presented until latter in the term, according to officials.Granath is accused of firing a shotgun blast last Saturday night. The pellets struck and badly injured Solon Sprinchorn  38 of Jamestown who is still reported to be in a critical condition.

The Bradford Era the day before
Gives a bit more info.'Grassy'/Granath  a recluse argued with Sprinchorn about the beaching of a boat on land in dispute.Sprinchorn was a heating and plumbing contractor. They both lived on Chaut auqua  Lake .Granath is described as a hermit known as Grassy, now 73 years old.

There is also a piece in the Somerset Daily American Oct 2nd almost the same but Sprinchorn had wounds from his chin down to his abdomen.

Sprinchorn must have survived because he is still advertising in the paper in 1957 but i can't see any outcome of the assault.

Sorry but I just had a look at the 1940 US census and Charles Granath was from Sweden according to that. 61 years single and Nationalised.
Of course he could be lying.

I think the fellow in the newspapers must be Carl (Charles) Hilding GRANATH b Sweden ~1878 to Andrew and Emma.
The family seemed to have been in the Chautauqua area since at least 1900.

HUGE, HUGE thanks to you both, I had hopes of this being "my Charles Granath" Charles father was Swedish and there was an uncle Carl, brother of Henric (Henry)  who died about 1881 ish in England, back to the drawing board I guess, I hope I might find him on 1921, can't wait for that

Many thanks

Just to add to the information
Charles Walter Granath was born 27/04/1877, Saffron Hill Holborn London
I am just hoping he might turn up on the next census 1921
His only remaining child Charles born 1906 was very evasive as well, he appeared on 1911 and then not again till I found his death 1977, once again I have no idea where he was in between,
And so the search goes on

Many thanks for your interest

Florence born 1904 and Charles Granath born 1906 were both shown as being in the workhouse Jan 1912, their discharge is 30/12/1912 for one child and 24/02/1912 for the other, it stated in the last column
"by whose order"
I assume this is the "removal details", it was by order to St Giles Home
Is it possible to find any records online for St Giles Home

Hi LM
You were asking about this
Is the St Giles Home actually the Receiving Home for Children, Broad Street (St Giles in the Fields & St George Bloomsbury)?
We have a creed register for Broad Street
Admission of Florence Granath, 31 Jan 1912, and Charles Granath, 24 Feb 1912
Admitted from Holborn

Both Discharged 12 March 1912 (to Holborn)
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS2G-19W5-G?i=358&cat=1389833

We also have a Register of Children Chargeable to the Holborn Union at the Receiving Home, 53 Broad Street W.C.
Says the Granath children were sent to Schools on that date (12 March)

City Road Workhouse creed register seems to confirm the Granath children were admitted from their census address, though it says 14 Penton Rise here.
Also on ancestry

Says deserted by father. Also that he got 2 months hard labour for it? :o

Florence at least was boarded out at Norfolk in 1913. See next post
