You might like to contact the Mitchell Library to enquire about absent voters lists for Glasgow (assuming that was still their place of residence).  These list showed a man's regiment and sometimes service number.  Link here: https://www.glasgowfamilyhistory.org.uk/ExploreRecords/Pages/Voters-Rolls.aspx
