Occupation of tambourer in Bo'ness

Hi,
My Great x 2 grandmother's occupation on the 1851 census in Bo'ness was a Tambourer. I have since found out that this was something to do with lace making. Quite a few of the other women on the census form are listed as this, so I wondered if anyone knew if there was a factory or employer of some sort in the area?

Embroiderer I think? tambourer of muslin I've come across in Linlithgow..

I would imagine that was possible Skoosh, I know my lacemakers worked from home.

Could it have been a form of needle-lace worked on fabric stretched over a circular (tambour) frame?

It was indeed embroidery (of any kind, not just needle lace) with the fabric stretched over a frame.

My grandmother had a tambour and used it sometimes for embroidery.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Hi Meggie
The sister of my great grandfather was also listed as a Tambourer in the 1851 Census, living in Cambusnethan   AND the list of surnames under your post includes two which crop up in my ancestral line, Gibb and Archibald.
Wondering if we might have a connection...
