Shoemaker Plumstead
« on: Thursday 19 September 19 02:32 BST (UK) »
Hi, I'm looking for a shoemaker that was living at 70 St James Plumstead in 1888. This is the only piece of information written on a note I came across, no other information. Can anyone help please.

There are some references in newspapers for shoemakers of Plumstead, though probably all a bit early:

Charles MAYBANK bankrupt 1862
George GOODERE, bankrupt 1864
Valentine DUNKLEY aged 47 who died in the 1878 in a tragic accident on the Thames (600-700 people died)
William KEEN aged 28 died 1885

There is a Charles MAYBANK born c1833 in Godalming, Surrey, bootmaker, at Plumstead in 1861 (RG09/408 / 102 pg21) with wife Sarah and son Charles born c1848.

The son Charles is also a bootmaker with his family in Richmond in 1871 (GBC/1871/0868/0152) and Croydon in 1881 (RG11/811/36 pg65) and still in Croydon in 1891 (RG12/592/ 122 pg23) - so I don't think this is who you are looking for.  :)

There are lots of shoemakers in Plumstead in the 1891 census, several of them in St James' parish.

"70 St James" is presumably 70 St James' Place. There was a baptist preacher there in 1881, and a dressmaker in 1891. No shoemakers.

Jabez West there on the 1891 electoral register, in 1890 it said James West (possibly an error?)

A Jabez West is in Woolwich in the 1891 census, but not a shoemaker.
