House numbering on the South Circular Road
« on: Friday 13 September 19 17:27 BST (UK) »
I am trying to determine the location of St Joseph's Nursing Home (a private maternity home) which was on the South Circular Road in the 1940s.  I thought the house number was 102.  However, 102 South Circular Road is currently a cafe.  I could be wrong, but the building does not strike me as having been a maternity home in the past.  So, I wonder if house numbering on the road changed at some point.  The present 102 is close to Leonard's Corner, i.e. the junction with Clanbrassil Street.  If anyone with access to a Thom's directory for the 1940s could check where it places 102, I would be very much obliged.  The proprietor of St Joseph's was surnamed McKeown or McKeon.

there are different sections of the SCR, so some of the numbers repeat.

Will have a look and see if I can find it

T.J. MacEoin in 1940 at 102 on the Portobello section of S.C.R. , next to Curzon st.

looks like the numbers have changed a little, it looks like a private house now, the one with the big hedge on streetview

Thoms for 1941,1942, 1944, 1945,1948 and 1951 show T.J.MacEOIN  as the householder while Thoms  1952 shows Nurse Mac Eoin as the householder.

If the numbers on the census correspond correctly it was a 10 roomed house

Thank you athcliath62, dathai, felixquaxer and Sinann.  That's great information and answers all my questions.  The street numbering obviously changed at some point. A ten-roomed house makes much more sense than a single story building, as the current 102 South Circular Road is.  Thanks dathai also for the additional information on the MacEoins.  That's where I would have gone next so you saved me some searches.  I'm a little surprised to learn that Nurse MacEoin, as my mother always referred to her, apparently had no medical qualifications.  I had assumed she was a midwife.  I know a local doctor was associated with the home and I now suppose Mrs MacEoin must have had a midwife on the staff.  In any event, my mother was happy to have four of her children delivered there and we are all still around!   Thanks again to everybody for your efforts on my behalf

PS I found a newspaper death notice for Nurse MacEoin which gave her address as "18 South Circular Road (formerly 102 South Circular Road)", confirming the suspected numbering change. Also, in fairness to her, the notice shows I was wrong to conclude she had no medical qualifications just because they are not mentioned on her marriage record or in her family census return. The death notice describes her as "(C.M.B.Nurse)". C.M.B. = Central Midwives Board.
