Where is this please
« on: Friday 13 September 19 14:03 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help with the location of these buildings, a pen and ink sketch made just before the start of WWII? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Have you any idea of the location and is there a signature anywhere on it? It maybe a case of the artist using artistic license which will make it harder to identify.
I have turned it the right way and cropped of the border for easier viewing.

Is it really a sketch?!

It looks like a photo to my poor old eyes, even if the ground in the foreground looks a bit bare...

Best regards,

It looks more like a lithographic print than a sketch.

Can you give us more information?  e.g. how did you come across it; how do you know it was done before WWII; is there a family connection to it et cetera

Could help with identifying the area, if not the cottages themselves.

It could even be a photo litho.  I'm not sure when they started using this process but I did quite a few more recently.

Add - this article suggests mind-1900s  :-\

Thanks everyone, in answer to the queries this one is in fact a print of an original pen and ink drawing, made by an ancestor of mine. I have several others (including the originals) which have all been identified, all were made between 1936-38, and unfortunately all over the southern half of the UK - including Boston Lincs, Dartmouth, Shrewsbury, Wells and the London area. Sorry I can't be more specific with an area but other works seem to be in this (wide) region.

Early 17th century at a guess. Timber framed cottages, brick infill, old tiled half-hip roof, should be grade II listed (if it wasn't demolished in 1940  :-\).

If the listings were all written in a consistent manner and the advanced search was more advanced, you could probably find it from here: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/advanced-search?searchType=nhleadvancedsearch
