the newspaper report is dated 7th Dec 1909 -so from the Lunacy register date of admittance is 6 Dec (so probably) 1909 -and at some point during 6 years he must have gone to Dorset Institution

Looking at past messages regarding Lunatic Asylums - and census returns - it does say only initials were written down.  For example

1911 Census, Bristol City and County Lunatic Asylum Bristol, Fishponds Bristol, Registration District 319, Piece 15058

We have

R D age 64 occupation, etc etc
G C age 62
W J C age56
S A G aged55
T T age 53

There are pages on patients listed

If Sarah Elizabeth was known as Elizabeth and passed away in 1910 - assume the 1901 census for Bristol, has George Elsbury - aged 33 (c1868) occupation Boot Maker - born Bristol with children Lily aged 4 and George aged 1.

Checking again the 1911 for Bristol, Stapleton and the patients in the Lunatic Asylum listed only by initials
