Sarah Sutton's (1822-1891) novels?
« on: Wednesday 04 September 19 20:05 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the titles of books, newspapers, or magazines Sarah Sutton (1822-1891) wrote or edited, and when they were published.
She edited the:
"The Englishwoman’s Review and Home Newspaper," (1857-59)
Said to be an editor of the "London Review," (_____), but she might not have been.

The 1881 census said she was a novel writer. Could she have written or edited the following?:

"Mad Marshall: or, a Life in the village of C-." By the author of Useless Riches [i.e. Sarah Sutton], etc. John MARSHALL, of the village of C-. London : W. H. Guest & Co, 1885.

"Worthy Workers. A monthly magazine for all, etc. [Edited and partly written by Sarah Sutton.] no. 1. March 1886"

Sarah Sutton (1822-1891) was a single woman who lived in Somersetshire in her youth and in the London area in her adulthood. She moved around a lot, had various occupations (the ones listed in the London Gazette & Old Bailey Proceedings & censuses were: ?servant?, schoolmistress; governess; hosier, glover, & perfumer; proprietor & editor of the Englishwoman's Review and Home Newspaper; literary profession; "literary and monetary agent" and accountant, general agent; editor and the proprietor of the London Review; Novel Writer-Author; "commission agent;" and lady money-changer). She appears to have lived by her wits and landed in debtor's prison two or three times. She was a witness in the trial of (Beautiful Forever) Madame Rachel and then she sued Mrs. Borrodaile (1868-1869). She is also listed in court cases concerning money changing (1850 & 1861), and court cases of her bankruptcy & debtor's prison (1850; 1859-1860; 1867 and annulled in 1874), and a court case regarding her father Daniel Sutton's will (1878).

She might be the Sarah Sutton listed on the 1841 census in Bridgwater, age 18 years, female servant of Robert Bryant.
1851 census.  May Fair, St. George Hanover Square, Middlesex.  87 Piccadilly. Sarah Sutton, Head, unmarried, 28, Hosier, born Somerset, Bridgwater.
1861 census.  Cavendish Square, All Souls, Marylebone, Middlesex.  9 Rathbone Place. Sarah Sutton, lodger, unmarried, 38, General Agent, Somersetshire, Cross.
1871 census.  St. Mary Paddington, Paddington, London, Middlesex.  29 Newton Rd. Sarah Sutton, head, unmarried, 48, Publisher (Retired), Somerset, Compton Bishop
1881 census. 1 Market Street, Llanwonno, Glamorgan, Wales. Sarah Sutton, visitor, unmarried, age 58, Novel Writer (Author), Cross, Somerset. (visiting her nephew Joshua S. Williams)

I would love any information about my relative Sarah Sutton and her occupations. Thanks.

I was very interested by your message about my 4xgreataunt Sarah Sutton, not least because I've only just found about her. Although I can't tell you any more about her than you know already I have a lot on her Sutton, Knight, Salvidge and Tutton ancestors. But of even more interest is her sister Elizabeth, my 3xgreatgrandmother, who married William Williams a commission agent from Pontypool, son of William also a commision agent. Given all the Welsh Williamses I have long hit a brickwall, which as a genealogist for over 40 years is both frustrating and humbling! Have you managed to trace this line back further, and how do you connect? As we are likely cousins have you taken a DNA test and might I be a match? My results and my own vast tree are on most sites but my main one is Ancestry (ERRINGTON One Name Study Tree). Sorry to bombard you with questions! Hope you are receptive...
Kind regards, Roger Errington

I descend from Sarah's grandfather Daniel Sutton's (1763-1829) half sister Mary Sutton (1778-1847). Sadly I am not showing a DNA match with you, but maybe you have a match with my granduncle. I am sending you a PM. I would be happy to share what I have collected on the interesting Sutton family, but I don't have anything on the Williams family except for Elizabeth Sutton's husband William.

I can understand your frustration on the Williams line. My Williams family lived in Trevethin & Abersychan. https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=651332.0
