Gypsy Brae Drowning
« on: Sunday 01 September 19 21:33 BST (UK) »
Hi, I'm re-looking into my family tree & would like to get some more information about my Great Grandmother Ada Bell. She was born in Cannongate 1905/6 & died 2nd Jan 1952. She went missing on New Years Day 1952 & her body was found in Gypsy Brae the next day, a verdict of drowning. I've been searching for any Newspaper reports from then but have been unsuccessful, any help would be gratefully received.
Thanks for reading,
Kathryn

I'm thinking that the discovery of a body in such circumstances would have made the Edinburgh Evening News and/or The Scotsman.  Also try Edinburgh Evening Dispatch.

I've been onto British Newspaper Archive site, typed in all sorts & nothing has come up. Is there a different/better page I should be using or am I doing it completly wrong? Ha ha
Thanks for your help

Hiya,

I find British Newspaper Archive a nightmare to search :o

Have you tried Goggle Newspaper Archive - https://news.google.com/newspapers

I had a look through Glasgow Herald beginning of 1952 for you earlier but couldn't see anything. However  you could cast an eye yourself and double-check. Plus see if there are any other papers to be looked at.

Looby :)

Hi Kathryn,

I took a quick look at the Edinburgh Evening News in British Newspaper Archives and it only seems to be digitised up to 1942 at the moment.

I believe that the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh may have copies of the Edinburgh Evening News. You could try contacting them to see if they could help.

Fantastic,  thank you all for your advice, I thought it was just me being a total novice with the page! I shall try these other suggestions, I'm sure you'll hear from me again later! X

Good Luck.

By the way Gypsy Brae is about 5 minutes walk from where I live.

Poor lady.
