Stockport, Cale Green area, a chapel

In the course of researching my Page ancestors in Stockport, I found mention of a chapel some of my ancestors used to attend. It stood on Meyer (Mayer?) Street, corner of Green St. I've tracked down a photo, but know nothing of the chapel's name or denomination. Can anyone help? I believe the building was demolished in the 1970s. Grateful for any comments.

On the 1959-60 map, it is shown as Cale Green Sunday School (Congregational).

Many thanks Heywood––that's a tremendous help. I have the impression that this branch of the family were strong nonconformists, and now I have a clear idea as to the particular brand. I'm sure the Local History Library in Stockport will have material on the local congregationalist movement. And you nudged me towards another useful research tool ... I'm ashamed to admit I never thought of looking at old maps!

Matthew Mayer (1740-1814) and his son Joseph Mayer (1775-1857), both of Cale Green, were founders of the Sunday school, I think.  If you google joseph you will see a picture of what the Sunday School looked like.It was huge!

Joseph Mayer was connected with Stockport Sunday School; reputedly the largest in the world. Not sure about the connection with the one in Cale Green which, if you check on Street View is still there.

I know nothing about the geography of the area or chapels  but remembered that both of them were described as 'of Cale Green' in their wills.

Earliest OS is this Lancashire 6-inch sheet surveyed 1845

I assumed that being in Cale Green and Mayer street it might have something to do with the Mayer family - I was after all searching Rootschat for Mayer! A bit of googling has led me to a couple of sites which say it is the former Cale Green Institute. A Cale Green Conservation document seemed to imply that it had become a chapel comparitively recently

A quick Look through the NLS maps will give you an idea of chronology from institute to chapel to Sunday school but it currently appears to be in residential use.

I have a copy of the conservation document somewhere but I’m currently in Tesco!

Edit: The conservation document was last revised in 2012 and gives no more (possibly less) information than can be gleaned from other sources. It claims that the premises are currently in commercial use which may well be correct.
