Hi there Shriley - sorry I have not replied to you sooner. I have had a busy time of late and have not been online much. Thanks you so much for checking out my ancestors. I have not been able to find the marriage of Alice and Charles/Otto Hermann. Perhaps they never married. I am going to try to go to Bancroft Road and see if they have any more details on Charles. He had a hairdressers on the Isle of Dogs and paid rates ect so they may some information on him. I really appreciate you looking for me. Many thanks Irene

Hi Irene  my wifes GT Grandparents were from Germany and settled in whitechapel london I found out that this area had quite a lot of Ger' immigrants, and there are German churchs both Lutheran and Catholic which hold records there was also a German hospital in the east end, the anglo german f.h.s has details I think. My research is for the name Schilp I found they were at 35 Grove st Whitechapel on the 1881 census and he was a cabinet maker, they then somehow ended up in Greenock Scotland

Hi Bob in Berlin thanks for your reply, as yet we have no idea which area they came from or why, someone in my wifes family said they were told that our Schilp was dutch origionaly, others say German,  maybe you could confirm for me that Schilp is actually a dutch or German name, I am hopefull that when I can obtain their  Whitechapel born daughters marriage cert (she was married in Greenock Scotland) that it may state where her parents were born, other than just Germany, as you probably know Scottish marr' cert's state where the parents are born. I will check out your info above cheers  :)

Hi Avro,

here's where I found the Info.: http://gedbas.genealogy.net/suchen.jsp;jsessionid=D659EC6B96F8451682E51E779F85D6AA
This is a german database

I can't confirm your german/dutch question but both are likely, in fact, another database: http://www.geneanet.org/ ( more international one) gives 60 Schilps, most of them dutch !
http://search4.geneanet.org/result.php3?source=&name=schilp&place=&recherche.x=6&recherche.y=5

Good luck, keep us posted !

I am interested in your message mentioning Benjamin Amsden Biner.  I believe he may be in my (husband's) family tree.
I have Benjamin Biner b.circa 1866 Rotherhithe, s/o William George Biner and Hephzibar Amsden.
I've no further information on Benjamin, but William George was a linen draper and married Hephzibar in 1859 in Stepney.
Heph was sister to my husband's g.g.grandfather John Amsden.

I have discovered that the Schilp family I am researching came to Britain to work in the sugar refining industry which was almost exclusivley using imported German workers in the whitechapel area of London. they were in the 1881 census as living in St georges in the east Whitechapel, they then appeared in the 1891 census in Greenock Scotland, I later discovered that Greenock was a major town for sugar refining and sure enough the males in the family were recorded as glucose labourers or sugar house labourers. At about this time the sugar factories in London were in decline but Greenock was still going strong, this must have been why they made the trek all the way to the west of Scotland (with nine children in tow) what a journey that must have been.  Are we nearly there yet?

Did someone mention sugar workers ??

Then, this is one site you have to see:

www.mawer.clara.net/history.html :
A site about the german sugar workers, who came to Britain, from the 17th. century onwards. Includes a database with over 18,000 Names, !!

Even if you don't find your ancestors here, there is such a wealth of information about sugar workers' and their lives here

Hi there Avro,

I have a fair amount of information on your (and other) Schilps to whom you are related. Including your Johann's birth in Borgentreich, Westfalen, Prussia, his parents, Franz Schilpp and Carlina Hartmann's marriage and their children.

I have John's wife Christian/Christina HIBBELER's birth, parents and siblings too, this family were also from Westfalen, Prussia.

I'm trying to work out a positive link to Frederick Schilp (Westfalen) who turns up in Greenock (from West Ham) at exactly the same time as John. They are not brothers but are perhaps cousins.

Frederick's parents were Joseph Schilp and Sophia Eikermann.

I'm not related I was just doing a wee favour for the wife of one of John's descendants.
