GERMANY: Is their a list of Germans that marry in the UK.
« on: Tuesday 03 August 04 23:26 BST (UK) »
I was wondering if there was a place that Germans that married in England had to inform someone. I am thinking about my ancestors marraige around 1891 that I cannot find and looking for somewhere where I could find details of their marriage.
My gt. gdf was German and his wife English. Any ideas?
Regards Irene

Nothing in particular that I can help you with, but have you tried The Anglo German Family History Society. They may have more direction for you.

Hi Irene have you looked at the registration records index, known as the GRO or St Cath's Index. They would have had to register the marriage onto this central register. If you like to give me the details I'll have a look for you at my next visit to the FH library.

Thanks Shirley - I have been looking for a longtime and cannot find them.
Charles Hermann/Alice Stroud. I think perhaps Charles had changed his name but may have married in his German name which I do not know.
I think they may have married around 1891 at Hoxton Old Town Shoreditch or around that area because that is where their first child is born Feb 1892. On that birth certificate father is Otto Hermann, my grandfather who is born later father is Charles Hermann.
I have purchased 2 wedding certificates in desparation.
Alice Stroud to Benjamin Amsden Biner August 1890 but Biner was not German.
Alice Greaves to Otto Reinhold Haus Herrmann May 1890 think Alice may have been married before but no her father was named Greaves as well and not Stroud.
Perhaps Charles/Otto and Alice never married or married much later.
Alice is Herman on the death certificate.
Very frustrating because I cannot tie up the right Alice Stroud or find out Charles German name. Another pair of eyes looking at this would be great. They are together in the 1901 census. Charles states he is a british subject born in Germany. Any help would be much appreciated. Best wishes Irene

Hi Irene I went to freebmd and Alice's marriage to Benjamin Amsden BINER is recorded in 1890, also a birth for B A BINER in London (same area) for 1865.

What is the name of their firstborn?

Thanks Shirley - Binner is the wrong line. I went there and bought the certificates thinking it was a connection because he married Alice Stroud.

My ancestor is Charles Hermann in the 1901 census at 6 Manilla Street. Poplar . On the first child born in 1892 it states father Otto Hermann and Alice Stroud as parents. My grandfather born 1899 the names of parents has changed to Charles Hermann and Alice Stroud.

What I am desparate for is the wedding certificate because I cannot tie up the family that Alice Stroud came from. I do not know Hermann's German name (that is why I cannot find the certificate)- why did he start off Otto and then become Charles. In the 1901 census he state he is a british subject. Was this from the marriage or did he get nationalized . Did they ever get married? I will keep plugging away. Thanks for your time. Regards Irene

Hi Irene I will be going to the Mormon library on friday so will have a look at the official records. What was the name of the first child born, please? That will help. Have you looked on the 1891 census as well?

Hi Irene I looked on the GRO marriage index for 1891 and 1890. Couldn't match any brde called Alice Stroud with a groom called Hermann!

These are some of the names that were on those 2 years

Otto Reinhold HERMANN and another duplicate entry but spelt HERRMANN at Croydon

Charles HERMANN at Wantage
Alice STROUD at West Ham
Charles HERMANN at Whitechapel
Christopher Carl HERMANN    "
