Myers family of Dewsbury and Leeds
« on: Friday 23 August 19 11:01 BST (UK) »
I am wondering what I can do to verify the following information on my Myers family.

My 3xggf Isaac Myers was born 1772 (Bapt. 15 Jan. 1773) in Dewsbury, Father William.  Isaac Myers and his wife Sarah had 5 sons baptised in Dewsbury (1802-11) and then 2 sons and 2 daughters baptised in Leeds (1814-1823).  Their first son William was born in 1800, but it seems that he was not born in Dewsbury.  However, there is a baptism 26 Dec. 1800 Shaftesbury, Dorset, son of Isaac Myers of the 15th Regiment of Light Dragoons.  This Regiment apparently was in Canterbury in 1800 and the only marriage found for Isaac and Sarah is on 9 March 1800 – Isaac Myers and Sarah Harrison in St. George The Martyr, Canterbury, Kent, both otp, by Banns, wit. Edward Pillow, Sarah Steed.

Although Isaac Myers was listed as a clothier on the baptisms of his children, on the death certificate of my 2xggf Thomas Myers (born 1815 Leeds) in 1872 in Australia, his father is listed as Isaac Myers, a soldier.  Thomas Myers was sentenced to 14 years transportation in 1833 for stealing cloth.  Isaac Myers was also listed as a clothier, on what appears to be a first marriage to Elizabeth Hemingway 8 Aug. 1793, Dewsbury. Their son William was baptised 20 Oct.1793, buried 7 March 1796 and Elizabeth was buried 20 June 1794 aged 21.

Isaac Myers died 1838 in Dewsbury Poor House, aged 66.  Sarah Myers was in Batley Workhouse in the 1841 Census (not bic), and in the 1851 Census she is living with her widowed daughter, Susanna Emsley and her birthplace is listed as Trowbridge, Wiltshire.  Sarah died 1854 in Leeds, aged 83.  William Myers was living in St. Bride Fleet St., London with his wife and son in the 1841 Census (bic) and died there in 1847, aged 47.

Hello
not sure how much help I can be.
But let's give it a go.
The land tax records have Isaac Myers at Dewsbury 1808 -1812 renting land from WilliamWilson junior.
It is at Daw Green and the other occupiers in 1808 William Batley,Isaac Myers,Benjamin Hatfield and William Myers
Same 1809
1810 William Batley has gone but others still there
William Myers has been in Dewsbury  since 1782.
To me it looks like William may be from the previous generation,Isaac's father perhaps.

There is another soldier called Isaac Myers who in 1806 is on the Chelsea pensioners admission register but he is a lot older .
He was pensioned in 14 April 1778 .Letterman 65 foot  worn out and age 76 in 1806/7. bc 1730
I'd guess he is the burial of 17.4.1808.

Like you I can see no other marriage for your Isaac and it would make sense but not finding a lot of proof.

Thank you so much for your response.

Isaac’s abode was listed as Daw Green on the baptisms in Dewsbury (Kirgate in Leeds) and I had seen those land tax records on Ancestry.  William Myers was Isaac’s father b.1751 and died 1817 aged 66.  Isaac Myers was William’s father and he died in 1808.

Would records for the 15th Regiment be held in Yorkshire or would they only be in Kew?
I will be visiting England next month and staying in Manchester (for family research) and hope to visit Leeds.

I followed up the first son, William, with the hope of finding more about Isaac and Sarah, but this seems to have raised more questions.  William and his wife Elizabeth had two sons – Frederick b.1838 and William b.1843.  I obtained a pdf of Frederick’s birth and his mother was Elizabeth Richardson (also in the GRO index for William).  The only marriage I have found is in 1827, which is very early for these births - William Myers, Widower, otp St.Mary, Lambeth, Surrey, marr. 22 Dec. 1827, Elizabeth Richardson otp, Spinster, Banns, William sgd, Elizabeth x, in presence of Robt. Eyers & Eliz Eyers.

Furthermore, whilst trying to find a Sarah (name unknown) in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, I found Sarah Eyris (Eyers/Eyres) born 1772, bapt. 18 May 1798, age 26, St.James, Trowbridge, Wiltshire to Parents William and Hester.  Sarah Eyre, Spinster, otp Trowbridge, marr. 4 July 1796 John Harrison, Bachelor, Trowbridge, by Banns.
Francis Harrison Bapt. 3 Dec.1797, Trowbridge, Wiltshire, John and Sarah Harrison (also Fanny Harrison, born 1797, Bapt.14 July 1811, age 14, Trowbridge, Wiltshire, to John & Sarah).

Sarah Myers was 65 in the 1841 Census, 76 in the 1851 Census and 83 when she died in 1854, suggesting a birth date from 1771 to 1776, which makes her rather old to have had her last child in 1823.

I am hopeful that perhaps you may be able to offer some further insight into all of these potentially possible or just coincidental records.
