louis elkington to be dated late victorian
« on: Thursday 22 August 19 18:35 BST (UK) »
hi there I have posted this photo before but again I now have the original so I have scanned full thing.
he was born 1866, it has wilberts 5 Bristol bridge Bristol on it, his wife was from Bristol they married in 1886 but they was married in birmgham and lived in Birmingham/wolverhampton after that.
I originally thought it may be mid late 1880s? now im not sure, I have found wilberts at that address around 1908 onwards on newsparer archive but this photo seems a lot older as he would be over 40 years old by that date, regards

Brad, the clothing and grooming looks about right to me for your mid to late 1800s (edit: 1880s) dating (and I would say no later than very early 1890s) - and hopefully moving it up the board will get it noticed by someone more expert than I.  :)
Cheers,
Peter

Thanks for commenting Peter. To me it looks like a reprint as at the bottom the photo looks squared off and it's been reprinted larger and cut to fit the oval shape. Louis and his wife Frances seemed to reprint alot of their older photos between 1910 and 1925 and it looks like this one could be too. He was married in 1886 aged almost 20 wonder if it's around that time frame.
His moustache seems to look that of a developing late teenager/ early 20s still to thicken. I have a photo of him aged 80 with a really full thick moustache

I would say 1880s, most likely mid-decade.

I would think that he looks late teens, maybe 20. The small moustache was popular with younger men at that time. Maybe it was  pre marriage portrait.

I can't figure out if his hand is resting on a pile of books or if it's the top of a pillar/post

It looks like a pillar with a book on top  ;D

but, I think, it might well be just the pillar top.
