Newfoundland Ancestors pre-1850s
« on: Thursday 15 August 19 18:15 BST (UK) »
Hi there

If you are reading this - then can I begin by saying good luck.

My ancestors the Rowe family from St John/Harbour Grace were in Newfoundland c1750 to c1840.

Although a lot of records are available online most of these start after 1840. The Grand banks website is a really good place to start. It only includes records that volunteers have been allowed to copy and post. http://ngb.chebucto.org/

If your family pre-dated 1850 then my next suggestion is that it is likely that they were involved in the fishing industry.  A really useful website is the Newfoundland Maritime History Archive which has a number of on-line resources including the Keith Matthews Names Files 1500-1850 https://www.mun.ca/mha/holdings/keith/index.php although it can be daunting when you first look at it - it list individuals by surname and forename that had a connection to Newfoundland - even if that person was not based in Newfoundland - such as Devon or Ireland.

And finally, another resource is the Family History Society of Newfoundland and Labrador https://www.fhsnl.ca although you need to pay to join they have a very good range of records that you can access online once you have joined.

In addition there a number of one-surname groups available that you can connect with.

Hope this helps
