JOHN McGUIRE 1825-1915

Hi Everyone
    I'm doing research on the above and I'm hoping to find others (descendant's) doing research on him. John is an interesting character and it turns out that he is Ben Hall's (the bushrangers) brother in law. 

John married Ellen Walsh 10th Of November 1852 in the Catholic church, Bathurst.  I seem to have found a couple of children born to this marriage but need to confirm!

Seems that Ellen and John McGuire split up OR she died, not sure yet and then John is married to (living with?) an Elizabeth DIXON?  They had a few children as well and I would love to know if anyone else is researching this family at all??  JOHN died in 1915 in Albury, buried in JUNEE cemetery NSW.  His wife Elizabeth? is buried there as well, in c 1903.  I have not been able to find an obituary or death notice for her.  John is mentioned in MANY newspaper articles, but I still would like to find other descendants if possible.  Any help/direction would be most appreciated.  Kindest regards Dianna

If you have not already contacted the Bathurst District Historical Society I would suggest they have plenty of info to share on John McGUIRE.   I have googled the Western Advocate (Bathurst newspaper) as I remember reading about an evening debate that I had wanted to attend, but could not - and neither could any of my family members ... It was on if Ben Hall was a hero or a villain.  The Forbes based solicitor and the Bathurst Accountant.

A bit of a side track, but Ben Hall married on 29 Feb 1856.  - a leap year.  And, civil registrations of bdms in NSW commenced the next day - 1 March 1856.   Ben Hall married Bridget WALSH.

My interest is not as a descendant of either Hall or Walsh or McGuire, but simply as a lass born on the Lachlan, with family interests throughout the Central West and further west from around 1815 on... (earliest arrivals for me date from 1790s)   and an Infants School teacher who was elderly and who had stories at the ready for the history of Grenfell, Forbes, Condo, Cowra, Carcoar.  This teacher was a spinster, and retired in the late 1950s.  Her father was the son of a convict transported to NSW and she was proud of her father and grandfather, so basically every child she taught (and she was a teacher for decades !) learnt about convicts and none of us ever learnt that there was any shame or stain on our heritage.  It was not until I came to Sydney to study after finishing High School that I discovered there was something 'wrong' with admitting to having a convict or two  or knowing about convictism.  Fortunately the attitude towards discovering Australia's history has progressed and convict research has found a foothold in preserving the built environment and heritage of many who arrived in the penal and pre- gold rushes eras.  There's still so much to be progressed in preserving our First Australians' environment and heritage though.

HI JM I started reading all the articles which appeared in the newspaper week by week in 1906, fascinating really and re the book I have contacted the Eugowra Museum to see if I could purchase it and to see if I could find Jeff Freeman who is a descendant.  I'm very interested in the whole area as well as my family were in Cowra (not long) they worked on the SLOAN property at NORTH LOGAN.  Then onto Booroowa, Gundagai,Tumut, Junee areas.  I did a lot of research on Rev James Adam and found a great website for him and photo, tried to imagine that this was the face that my Great Great Grandparents saw when they were married in 1861. 

I like gathering "Stories" of the places that family and extended family lived! So much more interesting.  I have contacted Bathurst and they are researching Maria Gooda/Goody for me and the MANSER family, I also asked them to have a little look for a McGuire baptism.

How all this started for me was a newspaper clipping in my Great Grandmothers family bible of John McGuire, I've always wondered who he was well now I know (as much as one can of course) So very interesting, I like to collect images and photos of where the family were living, so many remote little towns.  Funny with BEN HALL he actually held up the Reverend JAMES ADAM who married my GGGrandparents, just adds to fun really.  Thanks for your relp, links and information.  I like to collec t every little "scrap" I can.  Kindest regards Dianna

Hello,
I am a descendant of the McGUIREs, John's brother Thomas MAGUIRE was my 3rd great grandfather. Thomas died at John's shooting range in Germantown (now Holbrook) outside Albury in 1883. This, amongst other things, is mentioned in John's memoirs, 'Old Colonial Days'.
Would love to be in contact with other descendants and share information.
