Thank you for this.  I would never have even guessed that such a record existed.

You mention you have William and Agnes' parents' names. Might be good to add them here so that others who may be connected might recognise them as family.

Monica

The parents of William John Henderson were William Henderson, born in Scotland, and Katherine Henderson born Roberts, born in Ireland.  The father of Agnes Winning Henderson born Ross was John Ross born about 1869 in Scotland and who died in January 1914.  Agnes' mother was Jessie Ross born McGregor born about 1869 who died in 1917.  Both of Agnes' parents were born in Scotland.  This information about the dates of the parents has not been confirmed in any documentation which has come to my attention.  I have photos of both of Agnes' parents.

Just some additonal notes (that need confirmation):

The marriage between William and Agnes has been mentioned already in 1920. If there is any document that you should have in this collection it would be this one, to let you verify properly their parents' names. If you want to work further back on the Henderson/Roberts and Ross/McGregor lines, the parents' marriage or death certs should name their parents to let you work back with confidence further.

This looks likely entry for 1891 census:

William Henderson 22 tramway conductor b. Scotland
Kate Henderson 24 b. Ireland
William Henderson 1 b. Ireland
Mary A Henderson 3 b. Ireland

Address: 100 Bernard St, Glasgow/ Bridgeton

I can't see parents' marriage in the Scottish records of www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk  Maybe they married in Ireland.

1901 census:

William Henderson 34 Tramway Timekeeper b. Glasgow
Catherine Henderson 36 b. Ireland
William Henderson 11 b. Glasgow
Richard Henderson 9 b. Glasgow
Mary Henderson 2 b. Glasgow
Henry Gordon 40 boarder

Address: 118 Bernard St, Glasgow/ Bridgeton

William Jnr looks to have been so little when family moved to Glasgow, likely he saw himself as a Glasgow boy. There is a birth for a Richard Henderson in the Bridgeton area of Glasgow on SP. The original image would include the date and place of parents' marriage.

In Scotland, Janet and Jessie are first name variants (see www.whatsinaname.net/female-names/Jessie.html )

Possible marriage entry for Agnes' parents, with mother as Janet:

John Ross & Janet McGregor
1891
Tradeston, Glasgow
Ref 644/13 144

1901 Census entry

John Ross 33 iron turner b. Glasgow
Janet Ross 31 b. Glasgow
James Ross 9 b. Glasgow
Agnes Ross 4 b. Glasgow
Elizabeth Ross 1 week

Address: 64 Polmadie Road, Glasgow Govan/Hutchesontown

Agnes' birth , including her middle name of Winning, in the Hutchesontown area of Glasgow in 1896. The original image would let you confirm details.

...The father of Agnes Winning Henderson born Ross was John Ross born about 1869 in Scotland and who died in January 1914.  Agnes' mother was Jessie Ross born McGregor born about 1869 who died in 1917...

I can't see a death for Agnes' mother in 1917. There is a possible 1907 death in the index on SP for a Jessie Ross/McGregor, aged 39 in Possilpark, Glasgow (nothing under Janet).

A few possibilities for John Ross in 1914 to consider. You would have to view images to confirm if any are the correct entry.

William's mother was not Kate Robertson but DILLON. This is the maiden name he gave on his marriage entry to Agnes.

This looks a possible marriage for his parents:

William Henderson & Kate Dillon
1889
Bridgeton Glasgow
Ref 644/1 198

The original image for the 1891 census would help you to confirm the actual birth places for the Hendersons. The children Mary Ann and William showed as born in Ireland which may be a likely mistranscription. You have from earlier a William John Henderson b. in the Anderston area of Glasgow in 1889. There is also a Mary Ann Boyd Henderson born in the Hutchesontown area of Glasgow in 1888.

A 3yr old Mary Ann Henderson died in 1891 in the Bridgeton area of Glasgow. This is where the Hendersons were around the time of the 1891 census. Wondering whether this was William's sister. There is a 2 year old Mary showing in the household in 1901.

The family look to still be in Bridgeton for the 1911 census. The original image on SP would let you confirm the details. There are no available transcripts of the Scottish 1911 census.

I have the names of both their parents and 1944 & 1945 letters from a Dick Henderson, apparently a nephew, mentioning a number of family members.

Could well be his brother, or a nephew.

There is a possible death for his brother in Glasgow in 1968. A 77 yr old Richard Henderson died then. He married a Mary Buchanan Smart in 1917 in Bridgeton, Glasgow.

You are correct about Jessie's death being in 1907.  It was my typing error to give it as 1917.  The photo I have of her says on the back that she died in 1907.

It would have been nice for these people to have been given more distinctive names!  I have one 19th century distant relative by marriage who was named Xerxes.  That made finding information about him wonderfully easy.

Anyway, there were two correspondents who signed themselves “Dick”.  I have a letter from one dating from March 1941.  He seems, from my interpretation of the letter,  to have been a brother of William John Henderson.  That idea would fit nicely with the census data showing a Richard Henderson born about 1892 as a younger brother to William John Henderson.

The other letters signed “Dick” are the five air letters I have dating from 1944 and 1945.  He was in the Navy and apparently fairly young.  The return addresses on all of them is Coder, R. Henderson JX508886.  The hand writing is quite different and they address Agnes Winning Henderson as Aunt Nan.  She was apparently sending “care packages” to her nephew by marriage and he wrote to thank her.

The death you have noted in 1968 would fit nicely with the brother born about 1892.

I think it likely that the author of the 1944-1945 air letters, R. Henderson who signed himself “Dick”, was the son of the brother Richard bearing the same given name.  This would fit nicely with my understanding from the air letters that their author was a young man, very likely born after 1917, the year of the brother Richard's marriage.  Like his father, he too is very likely now dead.
