Help With Deciphering Cryptic Handwriting
« on: Thursday 01 August 19 08:47 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Could someone help decipher the writing for what is under the headings Abode and Quality, Trade or Profession for these two baptism entries.  I put the two into one file as that may help to work out what some of the words are.  I am fairly sure that the "Quality, Trade or Profession" is not "dead" :-\

Thank you for your time :)

I think it says "Since dead".
Perrins - Manchester and Staffs
Honan - Manchester and Ireland
Hogg - Manchester 19 cent
Anderson - Newcastle mid 19 cent
Boullen - London then Carlisle then Manchester
Comer - Manchester and Galway

Hi,

I thought the second extract read - Miner dead.
But then I looked again at the word written under "Abode" on the first extract and decided it looked very much like the word on No.2 I'd decided was miner !  ???

Sorry if that's no help at all.

Looby :)

Both look like "since dead" to me.  Perhaps as Paul was baptised as an adult, he subsequently died before the register could be written up, you might find a burial.....?

Was Paul baptised as an adult ?
I read the extract as Paul's parent's forename has been recorded as 'Adult' .....perhaps the mother died  at or just after his birth ?

Thank you all for the input! I would never have got "since" from that scrawl  ;D

Paul was baptised on the same day as his wife Rebecca whose baptism record is shown below - and doesn't tell much - and no "since dead" or any of those details

They also had another child, Richard, before Caroline and his record is below and again no "since dead". That was on the 20 Nov 1837.

I suppose that  "since dead" for the parents of Paul and "since dead" for him on the certificate for Caroline makes sense  :-\

What do you all make of the Abode on the cert for Caroline in the first post? Mangata or Uangata  and Kauere or Kauiri or something else?

Once again I really appreciate all of your input!  :D
