Looks like William Williams  - the early missionary -  officiated. He was based in Northland.

Well Kaniere is a place - but in Westland and I doubt the baptism would have been done in the Kaitaia area for that.

And you are right Charlie, it is William WILLIAMS that did the baptisms before he ended up way down south :)

I found someone from the area and they worked out that it could be be Mangatete - which is a settlement no longer but couldn't work out that Kauri(?) one. 

I think that the place Kauri is too far south of the old Mangatete settlement ... but at least I am getting more ideas of where to go tramping about :D

Appreciate the link and like the way you did that Minniehaha!  Nice to learn new search tricks!

Mangatete and "kauri" would need to be in the same area (I think) and the distance today between the two is about a 3 hour drive today - I am sure they did not live in 2 different places that in those days would be a day or two apart?

The register for these cryptic writings is by William WILLIAMS who was based from Bay of Islands north, and Kauri is well south of there - about 1 hour drive be today's standards.

But I do appreciate all of your ideas and suggestions Minniehaha :)
