Hi everyone,

I was thinking of subscribing to a newspaper collection, preferably one with British/Irish and American information. Can anyone recommend/help me?

Last year I treated myself to an £80 or thereabouts subscription to the British newspaper archive . I really hammered it for a year , and I'm still wading through all the stuff I downloaded . I wouldn't subscribe every year , but I got my value out of it last year , and it was very useful for searching for the ship movements of a Victorian ancestor as he sailed around the world. There is also an American one but I think that would be very American centric .

Membership of Findmypast gives access to the British newspaper archive, but by going direct it has a slightly better interface. However as a former IT professional, I thought the interface was about 15 years out of date. The search options were very limited compared to what I would have expected.

Gosh, that would be weird.  I wonder why an American site would focus on American papers?

I too wondered about a subscription to British Newspapers Archive but as Martin pointed out they are available on Find my Past.  However, I don't know whether FindMyPast has the same number of newspapers and years as British Newspaper Archive.  Does anyone know??

If you are in the UK some libraries have newspaper access.  I can access my local library from home with my library card number.

The actual data on FindMyPast and BNA appears to be the same. It's possible that the search routines on FindMyPast may take a bit longer to reach new digitisations, but it won't be by much, as it's all done electronically these days.

The newspaper pages shown on FindMyPast actually have …/bna/.. in the url, so it appears that they are only keeping one copy of the basic data.

I've just checked the "what's new" on BNA, and they mention the same titles as I saw announced last Friday on FindMyPast.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

For new subscribers only FindMyPast's 'Pro' package includes newspapers.

Some existing members still have their cheaper old packages which include newspapers but are no longer available to new subscribers  ;D

BNA is owned by FindMyPast, so I think we can be pretty sure the records are the same, which ever way you access them.
