New South Wales Convict - LEE or LEES Thomas
« on: Friday 26 July 19 16:14 BST (UK) »
Hi I'm looking for a convict record for a Thomas Lees who has gone missing from the Scottish 1861 Census.  Hi wife is living alone and his son I think is living with other family members in the 1861 Census.

He was born around 1821 in Glasgow I think he may have been convicted of theft but not too sure when.  He appears in the 1851 census then absent from the 1861 and then appears again in the 1871. He registers his wife's death in January 1868 o any time between 1851 and 1868.

Many thanks in advance.

Thanks for the census details.  :)

I see that Anc***ry gives a suggested record to  New South Wales, Australia, Police Gazettes, 1854-1930 for a Thomas Lee 24 Oct 1861 for left.
A newspaper article has these details -

Bathurst Free Press and Mining Journal

HORSE STEALING.
Thomas Lee was indicted for stealing, on the 23rd October 1861, one horse, the property of
William Pearce.
Plea — Guilty.
Sentence — Five years hard labour on the public works of the Colony.

Unfortunately the above article make no reference to it being the Thomas Lee you are researching.

Are you sure that the two Thomas Lees on the census posted are the same person as there is a difference of 8 years in Thomas' birth year from the 1851 to 1871.

Thanks for this.  I'm sure they're the same person as I have his death record stating the two women as his spouses.  I think it's either a transcription error on An**y or the actual record.  Still makes sense but unfortunately doesn't give any idea as to where he was from!!!  The search continues.  Thanks again for taking time out of your day to help.

I'm not sure if this Thomas Lee was an Australian local, that's what it sounds like.  Maybe he's not my man.  There was a few articles relating to him from the source you quoted (thanks for that)  and they relate to general theft pre dating the Oct 1861 Horse theft...............

Thanks for the census details.  :)
