I have just been told that my father was a Sargeant Major in the Black Watch Regiment
which I knew nothing about
How can I trace this - I have no army details just his name and date of birth

You will have to apply to the MOD for his records, you will need his date of birth and a death certificate, provided you have those his serve number is not necessary. How to apply is on the website.

You could also ask the Black Watch Museum, which is in Balhousie Castle in Perth.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
