GRO Reference for Sgt Roland Leslie Harness KIA WW2
« on: Wednesday 17 July 19 12:22 BST (UK) »
Hello

I am doing some research (for my Aunt) on my Great Uncle who was Killed in Action 17/01/1943 - in order to request his Military Records from the MOD I need to send a copy of his death certificate, which I can't seem to find listed.  To order it I need the GRO number. I have all the official MOD notifications sent when he was killed but no death certificate.  Where do I find the GRO number ? Any help in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Rachel

To have an English/Welsh Death Certificate he must have been killed/died in England or Wales.

Two possibilities:

One he was killed in a training accident in England/Wales
Two he was wounded overseas and shipped over to England or Wales and died there.

You can apply to the GRO for an "overseas" death certificate: War Deaths (Army-other ranks) 1939-1948, 1943 volume 17 page 191.

Hi

He is commemorated on the El Alamein memorial in Egypt.

There is an active group on Facebook on the Nottinghamshire Yeomanry which might have more information on his service - https://www.facebook.com/sherwoodrangersyeomanry/

You don’t need a death certificate as your man was killed while serving. If you read the bottom of the application form, you only need the death certificate if the  person died after discharge from the service.
