1851 Lookup for French
« on: Wednesday 17 August 05 08:39 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I would be really greatful if there is anyone who could do a lookup for William French in the 1851 census in the Aldwinckle area.
He is my greatx3 grandfather and was born about 1832. I believe that his parents were George Born abt 1815 and Mary born abt 1813.
Many thanks
Amanda

HI Amanda

I had just posted reply and then  the server went down so will try again.

WIlliam is aged 18 and in Aldwinkle with his father George and his mother Mary. Both William and Mary are noted as coming from Wigsthorpe.

A George FRENCH of Alwincle St. Peters bachelor marries a Mary SMITH otp (of the parish) on the 19th Jan in Lilford.

Wigsthorpe is often noted as being the Parish of Lilford cum Wigsthorpe so looks as though it is your family.

Hi Sandy,

You are a star. ;) certainly sounds like it's my family!

Here goes another question, or two.  Do you know how or if it is possible to find out who George's parents are? and if any of the other French's that are living in the Aldwinckle area are brothers or sisters?

Also you said that a George and Mary were married 19 Jan but you didnt say what year! Do you know atall?

Dont want much do I?  :)

Thanks a million
Amanda

Hello Amanda

Just to register: my 4xgreat-grandmother was a Rachel FRENCH from Thorpe Achurch; I can't give you a link with the later FRENCHes from the area (either Thorpe Achurch or Aldwincle) except to say I know there were a lot of them. Rachel was born around 1758, the daughter of John FRENCH (died 1797, Thorpe Achurch) and Rachel PEPPER (b. Wakerley c. 1732, married 1753, died Thorpe Achurch 1823). Perhaps eventually your FRENCHes will link with mine!

Cheers
Geoff

Hey Geoff,

I have heard that there was two French families living in Aldwincle that were unrelated. I find this very hard to believe after visiting there recently, it was such a small village!

Oh such fun... ;)

Happy hunting and hope to find a link also.
Good luck. :)

Hi,  I note your thread is about 10 years ago, but I'm new to the site.   :)
I'm not sure if you have finished your family tree but I'm a French who's roots are in Aldwincle.  There is more than one French family there, and not all related, mainly because a lot of their ancestors came from the big prison camp for French Navy/Soldiers based at Yaxley soon  renamed Norman Cross.  Many settled after the Napoleonic War ended and as Locals could not pronounce their French names they were known as 'them Frenchy's' - hence the name stuck!  You will find a big pocket of them along from the A1 area right through the main road to the A43, they followed the road in those days.
I'm from Robert and Margaret French [nee Robinson]lineage. [my great grandparents] My father is 87 [Dennis French] and still alive.  I think he is the last remaining French from that era and who remembers it like it was.  I'm not sure if you're a relative  but any help on family trees would help  :) I'm stuck so any help appreciated - Jan French

Hello Jan - even after 10 years I'm still here. Will poke around a little and see whether I can link your Robert and Margaret to anyone in my tree. I see Margaret was born in Wadenhoe, which is itself encouraging. Geoff
