Clifton House, Insch, Aberdeenshire
« on: Wednesday 17 July 19 11:25 BST (UK) »
Having done some research on my maternal family tree, I have come across many entries from other people of family member being listed as resident at Clifton House Insch Aberdeenshire.  My great grandmother has this listed as her address in her bible.  Would anyone be able to find out what Clifton House was as there appear to have been a lot of people residing there in the late 1800,s and early 1900’s.  Thank you.

After a quick search I saw one entry online on someone's private genealogical website for their ancestor Joseph Fraser who is apparently listed as 'proprietor' of Clifton House, Insch, in the 1880s and 1890s. My first thought was that it was maybe some kind of tenement building, but having googled Insch I don't think it would be large enough to have that kind of dwelling!

Have you found any of your ancestors living there on any census? Looking at the number of residents, their occupations, how many per household might give you some clues.

This is a map of the corner of Commerce Street and Charles Street https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=19&lat=57.3410&lon=-2.6166&layers=168&right=BingHyb
I wonder if this is the property https://goo.gl/maps/to3kRjWwHtEkjXX69

Have not seen any census from Scotland with my great grandmother on at the moment.  Her name was Alexis Robb and it appears she is on 1881 and 1891 census but I do not have any access to these to see full details.  I do have 1911 census but by then she was living in England and no longer in Scotland.

As I posted it appears to have been an ordinary house.

If you go on scotlandspeople & do a free search of the valuations rolls index you will see that from 1895 onwards there were many tenants in that house. It was quite common in a big house to have several families renting a room.

I have found Alexis in the 1861, 1871, & 1881 censuses. She was born in Premnay circa 1860. In 1881 she was employed as a cook & was living in the village of Alford. Hope this helps! Scotlandspeople is the site to go to if you want to view the censuses. The index is free to search.
