South Australia: Alexander Johnston
« on: Wednesday 17 July 19 08:38 BST (UK) »
Hi, I have a Alexander Johnston that come over to South Australia in 1855 he was 37 years old.
He travelled with William and Alexander Savage (aged 16 and 15) and also Elizabeth and Jane Savage (aged 12 and 10).
From a family bible I suspect that Alexander Johnston was the Uncle of these 4 Savage children.
I suspect that the parents of the 4 children were William ROBERT Savage and Margaret Johnston therefore Alexander possibly the brother of Margaret Johnston. (the parents names are in the family bible)
When William Savage died near Woodside South Australia the witness on the death was a G.Johnston (C) and I have been told C was for cousin.  I have lots of Savage information but I can't find anything on the Johnston family, any help would be great, thank you.
cheers
Megan

I wonder if the connection goes further back in SA?

There are several births in Adelaide SA in 1840s to John JOHNSTON and Jane SAVAGE. Alexander 1840, John 1843, James 1846, John 1851, Mary Ann 1855.

Jane Savage JOHNSTON died in 1874, nok John JOHNSTON (husband), reg 59/158, Nairne district SA.

Do you know when Alexander JOHNSTON died and if he married?

I think it is a possibility that another member of the Johnston family come out before Alexander in 1855.  it is interesting to see that another Johnston has married a savage and all the names are the family names, do I will definitely look into that family and see if I can see a connection.
I don't know anything about Alexander Johnston except what is in the family bible, which basically just mentions his name and then he turns up on the shipping records with the savage children.
cheers

Do you have any clues about AJ's religion? Also do you know the parents and any siblings of Margaret Savage nee Johnston (potentially his sister)?

A potential candidate is this AJ
"DIED.
June 27, at his residence, West-terrace, Alexander John-
ston, aged 44 years.
"
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article821043

The ages are close enough to bear looking twice at. He's in the GenealogySA Death index as Alexander Johnstone with an e but buried in the same grave at West Terrace Cemetery as a William Johnston died 19 Dec 1879 aged 66 years.

Obit for James JOHNSTON (1891) mentions brother Alexander (and William who died in 1879)
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article224732681

Modified to add:
Actually this obit says his brother was Andrew Galbraith. (Says James arrived 1839 with his father)

If this is the correct family  :-\  more info here in this obit:
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article148119614

James was born in Argyleshire in 1818 and came to Australia on the Buckinghamshire arriving 21 March 1839. He was very successful - "In all probability he was the wealthiest man in the South" and introduced quail and perch into the environment (probably a questionable act!).

However, in none of these obits for the JOHNSTON familes is there any mention of the SAVAGES.  :-\
