Stenhouse in Lauder in 1844

My ancestor Andew Stenhouse had a daughter, Catherine in 1844 in Lauder, Berwickshire. This is odd as he spent most of his life in Stow, Midlthian and he must move back there as he dies in Stow in 1871.

Why would someone move to Lauder at this time? Also does anyone have an index to the Lauder 1841 census - I'd love to know if my Andrew born 1796 appears.
