John Oldknow removal order
« on: Sunday 07 July 19 22:58 BST (UK) »
I thought I had the right John Oldknow, baptized Smalley 1759 son of John Oldknow and Hannah Smedley, married Hannah Slack at Denby 1786,daughter Elizabeth baptized 1786,moved to Horsley, and died there 1798 but I recently came actoss a removal order for John Oldknow, wife Hannah and daughter Elizabeth to Horsley Woodhouse dated 1787.
Have I mixed up two different John Oldknows or could there be a reason for his removal. John and Hannah Smedley had several children all baptized at Smalley and John Senior was buried there.

Place of legal settlement was not necessarily place of birth or baptism. John Oldknow’s original place of settlement may well have been Smalley, but he could subsequently have gained a new settlement in Horsley. He could have done this by serving an apprenticeship in Horsley, or by being employed there for a full year (as a ‘yearly hired servant’), or by paying annual rent of at least £10 there, or by serving as a parish officer there, etc. So it’s certainly possible that it’s the same man.

Thank you Bookbox, I hadn't realized that there were other alternatives to place of birth, I shall have to see if I can find which of these might apply.

Think that the important piece of information re this removal was not shown, which is that John, Hannah and Elizabeth were removed from Denby to Horsley Woodhouse.

Their marriage 14 Dec 1786 at Denby states that John was of the Parish of Morley, and Hannah was of Denby Parish.

In 1787, you would have to purchase the removal order to find the exact date, are removed to Horsley Woodhouse with their daughter who can be assumed to have been born Denby where they had lived since their marriage and had become a burden on Denby Parish.

Horsley Woodhouse, had no Church until abt 1882, so living in H W you would have been Bpt etc Smalley  or Horsley.

Thank you Spendlove. Horsley Woodhouse having no church at the time I am interested in would explain a lot, since my Oldknows seem to appear in Smalley for baptisms and Horsley for burials. I thought they had moved but this would explain some facts that seemed at odds with each other.
I had tried to get the removal order, but I seem to be having difficulty with Derbyshire archives.

Hi Liz,
I'm trying to trace information on John Oldknow b.1813 Smalley, and his possible connection to a Sarah Fletcher b.1801 Nottingham. I wondered if he was a descendant of John & Hannah mentioned in your original post.

John's daughter Caroline had an illegitimate son George H Oldknow, who appears - detailed as Grandson - with Sarah Fletcher on the 1861 census.

Hi Paul.
I think your John Oldknow is probably John and Hannah's grandson. his father being William Oldknow and his mother Mary Wood. If you use Ancestry a lot of Smalley baptisms are labelled Longford, I am not sure about Sarah Fletcher but I am going to explore

Hi Liz,
Thanks for your reply, and the tip about Longford, who would have known? So that uncovers John's baptism. It's interesting to find what can so easily be missed  :-\
