Lookup Please - BARBER, Mary Ann, b. about 1817

This is my first time posting a message on your chat board, so I hope I provide the correct information.

I am looking for information on one of my ancestors, Mary Ann Barber.  Her father John Barber (b. about 1790-1800) was a gardener who lived at 5 Lord Street, Chorlton upon Medlock as of 1837 (per Mary Ann's marriage certificate).   On the 1861 Census, she was listed as being born in Scarboro, Yorkshire.  She married Thomas Chorlton in 1937, b. about 1817 and had at least one child Catherine Chorlton.  At some point they must have moved to Manchester.

I am looking for birth information so I can try an locate her Mother's name and/or marriage information about John (father).


Any assistance you can provide would be appreciated.

On the 1871 census her middle name is Jane - quite clear.  Is that right or should it be Ann as you put?   Again it says Scarborough as place of birth and husband Thomas, a chimney sweep.   It might be worth asking for a 41/51 look-up on the Lancashire board to see if they are still in Cholrton and her parents might be there too.

Thanks Andrea, I'll try that.  I was trying to find the census record where you see her name as Jane, but I can't seem to find it.  And now I'm wondering where I found Mary "Ann" from - my records don't show the Ann??  Anyway, I have tried looking at the Free Cen site, but it won't come up and my Anscestry.com information just shows Mary.  Can you please give me the link that you used?

On ancestry.co.uk Just put in Mary Charlton and Lancashire and it will come up under Mary Jane.  b1818 Scarborough
