Hi folks,

I'm looking for some much valued help and advice.

I bought three DNA kits, one which I have just done and will post this morning. However, I want my Mum to use one and my Wife to use the other. When I send my Mum & Wife's in the post and get the results back, Can I store the DNA information on my tree against their names?

I am the only Family Researcher in the family and both my mum and my wife have no intentions in setting up a tree and If i need to create a Mini Tree for both of them just to get the DNA results, then i feel that it I might lose some DNA matches if they come through.

Can someone tell me if the three DNA tests can be hosted on my tree?

Thanks in Advance!

If they are from Ancestry:

Quote
A DNA test can be linked to only one tree at a time. If you want identical trees on two accounts, you can copy a family tree from one account to another. To link a DNA test to a tree that's on a different account, share the DNA test to the account the tree is on (not vice versa).

If you're in the account your DNA results are in and your DNA homepage says +Start tree instead of Link to Tree, you don't have a family tree in the account you're in. To transfer your tree from another account, sign out of the account you're in and sign in to the second account, then follow the steps in Moving Trees Between Accounts.

HI Gadget,

Thank you for your prompt reply.
I'm sorry, but i'm finding it hard to get my head around this. Does this mean that two new trees must be created and then linked to mine?

The question that i asked was if i can host the three DNA tests directly on to my own tree. one for me, one for my mum & one for my wife.

If the tests are all linked to your account, you can link them to the same tree.

So, I can put the DNA codes on my tree and attach it to the correct person?

Yes.  I have only one tree which hosts the tests for myself, my husband and my daughter as we are all in this one tree.

When on the DNA page the banner across the top allows me to look at ethnicity/shared matches/thrulines for each of us by means of a drop down choice.

HI Pheno,

So my DNA code is attached to me in my tree. When i send my mums DNA with it's Code is there an option to attach that code on to my mums part of my tree? And will this show on my mums part in my family tree?

Its a bit different now than when I did it some time ago due to the recent data protection changes.

All I can tell you is that your dna results need to be attached to people in trees so you can either have a tree each or one tree with each of you in it as individuals which is probably better in your case if the other two people don't have any genealogy interest.

In theory when all the results are back you need to attach your results to you in your tree, your mum's results to her in your tree and your wife's results to her in your tree.

Someone who has done this recently will correct me but I think that currently each of you has to set up an account individually to actually register the test and get the results but once results are received the other two are each able to nominate you to manage their accounts and to allow you to attach their dna to your tree.  That then would be the end of their involvement as all matches etc would come to you as the manager - provided you have set it up correctly.

The best thing you can do, whilst waiting for the results is to start a tree on your account and make sure that both your wife and mother are shown as individuals in this tree so that you have somewhere to attach the results.  Also of course, then go on to expand your tree with what you know so that you will get more matches.

If you already have an Ancestry tree with your wife and mother in it then it is ready to accept their results when received.

Good luck,  Pheno

Not sure what you mean by your DNA code - I think that is just a means of identifying who has sent what test to Ancestry.  When you receive the results they will be unique to each of you but not a 'code' just a set of results which you then attach to those individuals in trees.
