On reflection I am wondering whether he was awarded the Africa Star as well which has somehow gone missing and that the ribbon bar represents his three stars (France and Germany, Africa and 1939-45) with the War Medal and the Defence Medal separate.

Someone has made up the bar, it would never have been worn like that. All the ribbons would have been worn together, in the order of seniority. When there were too many ribbons to be worn in a row, a second bar would have been worn.

Yes.  Agreed.  Still puzzled about the Africa Star ribbon on the bar but no medal.  Did these belong to the same person?

Yeah as far as my nan is aware they all belonged to her father 👍

Well with the Africa Star as well as the France and Germany Star he certainly saw a lot of service.  If you send for his service record that should answer some of your questions.  You could then set about finding a replacement Africa Star and mounting the medals as they should be worn.  there is no shortage of expert advice on this site if you need help interpreting the jargon on the service record.
