Confusing births

I have been looking up the births of a brother and sister three year apart. On each birth record there are two mothers maiden names with the same record number ! How can this be? thank you for any help. Jake.

Sounds as if they have been registered twice - was the mother known by two names?

Possibly the original birth was registered BEFORE the parent's marriage.
Then, when they later married, the births were re-registered under the Legitimacy Act.

Thank you for the replies. Yes possibly registered twice but the registration number is the same for both names.  And as far a I can check the mother was not known by two names. Rather confusing

Is it her maiden name and married name - was she most definitely married when the children were born?

Same reference number,  listed twice .... so there would be just the one record,  which has been indexed twice .  Likely if you access the actual record you will  notice the reason for the indexing.

The only scenario that I can think of that would fit would be if the mother's parents were not married when her birth was registered but her father acknowledged paternity and was entered on the birth cert. and she subsequently acknowledged both names on official documents.
