Locating "Bank, Leeds"
« on: Friday 28 June 19 12:28 BST (UK) »
Hello folks. Since your wonderful help regarding Burnt Edge earlier this week I have come along in leaps and bounds figuring out some other obscure locations by myself. Now I am stumped again by "Bank, Leeds". Several examples of the reference can be found here:

https://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/WRY/Leeds/LeedsBaptisms1735-1738

My ancestors are otherwise centred around West Street (obsolete), so I very much doubt that Bank refers to the area now called Bankside in Harehills. My best guess is that it refers to the area around the Bank of England branch in Mill Hill Ward (shown on the 1852 map https://maps.nls.uk/view/102344959), but can't confirm this. It's very difficult to use Google without coming up with a list of all the banks in modern Leeds!

Enter 'Bank' into the drop down location search tab.

Not in the slightest! I've been focused on a line in Huddersfield (which I don't know very well either) and just peeped into the line of a wife who came from Leeds. Found myself very disoriented! Sorry for troubling you...

We welcome requests from all here! :)
Surprised at some requests maybe from people who have never visited UK, asking about what must be ancient history to some.

Just to add about the area known as the Bank.
It was a major area in the part of Leeds where currently there is the 'Leeds Playhouse' together with the imposing building currently the  NHS headquarters.
Previously we had the 'Quarry Hill' complex, then before that the area known as the Bank, run down area with lots of Irish people existing here.

Thanks a lot, I'll bear all that in mind.

As for asking obvious questions, I do rather remind myself of the tourists who used to ask me where Durham Cathedral was when they were standing in front of it!
