Joseph Outram

I am trying to track down the Joseph Outram who was awarded the Edward Medal for his part in the attempted rescue of miners from the Hamstead Pit in 1908.  He was part of the Tankersley rescue brigade but I can find no information on him either before 1908 or afterwards. If anyone has any information I would be very grateful. Thanks.  Phil

The Sheffield Daily Telegraph 21 July 1908 does say he is of Hoyland Common.He was employed in the Rockingham colliery.

They are correctly spelt as Outram on the 1911 census. Using the 1901 details I just searched on Alice b 1869 + or - 1yr birthplace Retford living in Yorkshire

Looks like they married either 1889 Wortley or Notts 1892  www.freebmd.org.uk

Re. the rescue have you checked on line newspapers (FindMyPast or British Newspaper Archive - a subscription site).

There are numerous articles and the Sheffield Daily Telegraph, 21 July 1908 has a photograph.

Thanks all for your responses so far.
  I am not convinced that the Joseph Outram listed as a colliery deputy is the same one.  In another message posted in 2009, Rootsweb member "Grizzly" asks about a Joseph Outram who was a Colliery Manager so I think there is risk of confusion.  The Outram I am researching was listed in the 1908 Hamstead disaster reports as a "Miner".
 Please note that Joseph Outram is not a relation but purely a subject of some research I am carrying out for a forthcoming book.

The newspaper article mentions that Joseph Outram was awarded a medal for bravery in connection with the Hampstead Colliery disaster in 1908. Joseph had seen much service in the Army and was a colliery deputy employed by Hoyland Silkstone Colliery. His nephew Albert found him hanging in the stable.

It may be worth checking to see if his nephew was Albert Outram and following that line in the hope of finding the true Joseph Outram.

The 1901 has another Joseph & Alice Outram - Joseph b 1866 Ecclesfield and living there but he was a steel forgeman.  All details posted are relevant to the Joseph you are researching

It could be that Albert's (nephew of Joseph) father is Horatio Outram.

1871 with Horatio and a Joseph Outram of the correct age. -
